Re: Can anyone identify these beautiful balls?

Dear MicroPunter, beautiful pictures! As to the subject of your query, I have been seeing them fairly often, usually in samples of garden water, near moss and decaying leaves. They are biflagellates, green algae, from the Volvocaceae family (aka globe algae). They are truly ubiquitous. Firstly obser...

Re: Help with identification / garden water life.

Hi Topcode, Thank you for your reply. I was considering whether it could be some plant debris. However, it does not seem to have clearly visible focal or non-focal areas of chlorophyll, nor does it appear to have a cell wall or be multicellular. It does appear to be relatively large, though (as comp...

Help with identification / garden water life.

Hello microscopists, I did some natural observation yesterday (rain water collected in my garden + biofilm growing on an edge of plastic bucket). I observed the usual suspects (rotifers, diatoms, ciliates), until I have come across this beauty. Does anyone know what it is, or what direction should m...

Re: Killer Biofilm Growth

Also, make sure your samples are not exposed to direct sunlight, as this can also have a negative impact on oxygen levels through temperature fluctuations.

Re: Killer Biofilm Growth

Yeah, sudden O2 level drop is the most plausible explanation in this case. Maybe try to schedule some 'open lid' intervals during the day? A few hours at a time may do the trick.

For some reason, this video resembles an aesthetic that could’ve been used for a Pink Floyd music video 😅
Nice one! Keep it up!

Re: Killer Biofilm Growth

A sudden drop in O2 levels?
Maybe the population has overgrown the producers’ ability to sustain the system.
