Holy moly!
Rotifer Rave is right! I'll have to start collecting water from plant saucers.
What latitude are you at? I don't have a whole lot of liquid water in my garden for very long this time of year.

Re: AO 160
That floating/grease/glide stage (the real name I think) is wonderful. I didn't know they existed until I found them on some AO Sixties I bought to rehab for a school. They make life a lot easier for students (and the rest of us) to move the slide by grabbing something other than just the slide. Mo...

Re: AO 160
The 160 should be an infinity system and use the Cat.176 10x and Cat.184 15x eyepieces. Many of them have a Cat.138 (I don't recall the right Cat.#, but it's a 13?) or similar eyepiece by default which has a narrower field of view, often locked in with a retaining screw on the underside of the tube...

Re: AO 160
An excellent idea! And you seem to be dead on with those part numbers. There are several offerings out there--I'll investigate.

Re: AO 160
Another question: The objectives shown here have been great so far, but at some point I would like to explore some different options, like a 20x and a 60x. The 60x in particular is attractive, giving a magnification boost without having to monkey with immersion oil. Unfortunately, I haven't been abl...

AO 160
Hi all, As I explained over here in my introduction, I been working with an American Optical 160. It has performed quite well over the few weeks I've had it. My principal interest is in pond life, and it seems to be well suited. 160.jpg One feature that I did not know to expect has been the "floatin...

Re: Plastic cover slips?
Thanks for the responses, all. Honestly, I can’t recall ever breaking a glass cover slip in a dangerous way either, but the existence of the plastic ones made me wonder. You never know with Amazon, but Carolina is a reputable supplier, so I assumed they had a purpose. Anyway, onward with glass slips!

High drama on the slide
Examining a pond water slide with my AO 160 using the 43x objective, I observed this fellow: still.png He was large and rather ponderous compared the the nimble ciliates that buzzed around him as he executed casual three-point turns. Graceful, nonetheless. His insides sparkled with green jewel-like ...

Re: Plastic cover slips?
I think Tom Jones is right, unfortunately. The Amazon ones are basically useless--they aren't even totally flat. Save your money. My kids do use microscopes and I sometimes worry about them breaking coverslips and cutting themselves, so I wanted to investigate. (They haven't broken any yet, but a pa...

Thanks, einman!
Hmm, yes, the kitchen table. And there’s all that kitchen counter space that goes unused like 80% of the time…

Re: Hello from Pennsylvania
Topcode, thanks for the welcome. Yes--there's something about the older microscopes that just grabs one. (The same is true of telescopes, at least for me.) And spending pennies on the dollar for superior instruments doesn't hurt! (At least if you don't mind a little tinkering.) PS: is that use...

Hello from Pennsylvania
Hello! I’m happy to be here, and have learned a lot already. I come to microscopy inspired by my daughter, who is in grade school. She is a serious nature enthusiast, and loves studying living things in detail. So, I got her a microscope as a gift two Christmases ago. It’s an Amscope from the lower ...

Plastic cover slips?
Hello! I recently discovered plastic cover slips for sale, such as here: https://www.amazon.com/Raylabcon-20-40-5301-Disposable/dp/B01MZ4JYC0/ref=mp_s_a_1_3_pp?crid=1OG11JWTSK5AP&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Wo31NpXXOa7EBvnZiOjhoHzOsMZ7wyL3nFYttmEKFxoXeOgWXBgdxX0ec15QN1DhVfUkUcq1DyTitH34ZPPwH3ofbSnXRDa7Nsk2CuOZ...
