Re: IDENTIFY SLIDE FILTER NIKON?
You might get a better guess if you can measure the dovetail and match it up with a scope. My guess is that the oblong windows (probably wave plate, clear, and polarizing) are meant to accommodate stereo paths. It's possible it fits on the end of a Greenough scope or under the head in a CMO scope. T...

Stjepo, looks like it's intended for a stereo microscope - likely including both a pol filter and a wave plate.

You don't want to mix them up. The CH, BH, CH2, and BH2 have 160mm finite objectives and want finite heads. The CX and BX have infinite objectives and want infinite heads with the proper tube lens inside.

Re: Siedentopf adjustment of Binocular Head
A guess is that the center cap (with the interpupillary distance markings) unscrews or pops off - revealing a nut or other adjustment to draw the binocular tubes closer together and tighter. Failing that, a complete re-lube with a damping grease might be an option.

A way to eliminate most of the hassle with a cell phone as a microscope camera is to buy or use a spare phone. For example, you can buy a new-old-stock iPhone 6 for around $60 on eBay, a holder for about $20, a remote release for about $15, and a third properly corrected Leica eyepiece for perhaps $...

Re: Unidentified thread-adapter
No idea what it fits. However, the 520544 number could well be a Leitz/early Leica identification. Later ones, in microscope accessories, will have a "10" in front (e.g. 10520544).
The M42 end would be useful, even if you ended up adapting something else to the small end.

Good 100x lenses are often designed with some protection for the central portion of the glass. With oil immersion, a 100x may yield an OK image with a slight scratch. Yours, however, was repeatedly entered into a demolition derby. In addition to scratches, there's a good chance the oil seal has been...

Re: Considering making an inf. frankenscope, would like epi options, have some objectives, thoughts?
A relatively easy and affordable way to get a tube lens for an Olympus BX would be to scavenge one from a broken BX (U-BI30) binocular head. The eye tubes fairly commonly break off during a spill, leaving a tube lens and dovetail behind. With patience and eBay luck, you might find the parts around $...

Re: BX system and field number (FN) for different configurations
You'll typically lose a bit of field after stacking several intermediate accessories. Leica provides guidance for their various heads and the number of intermediate pieces. I don't recall seeing the equivalent from Olympus, though it's likely out there somewhere. I'd think you could place one elemen...

I've had a Laboval, Gary, and thought it was OK, but with middling mechanical construction, illumination, somewhat constricted field of view, and OK but not exceptional optics; not particularly better than $400 or so AmScope. I don't know if the Ergoval will be a step up. If you already have this, a...

Re: Considering making an inf. frankenscope, would like epi options, have some objectives, thoughts?
It sounds like you want to have both an episcopic and brightfield scope at a bargain price. One way to go: 1) Get a complete but affordable epi microscope stand, intermediate illuminator, nosepiece, and BD objectives. Either an Olympus BHM, maybe a BHT or BHS plus an epi illuminator, or a Nikon Opti...

Wayne - that "contrast automatic" feature is new to me. Thanks - it should be much easier to use than fiddling with perceived resolution and refocusing. My question - do you know if Nikon and Olympus infinite objectives behave in much the same way?

Someone will likely be willing to swap it for one without the added bits of polarizing film. You might also hope to acquire a matching condenser and a couple more objectives - at a...

These days, admission to an art museum is $20. Owning great art can be orders of magnitude more expensive. Your BX is like having lifetime rights to a spectacular collection—actually collected, curated, and often at least partly created or arranged by you.

Re: how scared should I be of mercury lamps
There are two main risks: exposure to UV light in use and shattering of the bulb . . . with a release of mercury and mercury vapor. Unless the power supply shows a clear indication of the life left in the bulb or other reliable assurances it is near new, you might assume it's past its useful life an...

Re: Prepared slide set for demonstrating contrast techniques?
You may want to show how the thickness of specimen preparation affects contrast methods as well. Stains also affect the choices. This will be easier and more beneficial with prepared specimens - so if most everything you're doing is unstained live protists and plankton it is perhaps not as relevant....

Re: Leica DMRB- which lenses and prisms for DIC
The Accu-Scope objectives on this are semi-apo. In other words, more like plan fluorite than plan apo. The ones I've had did not perform as well as their Olympus, Nikon, and Leica counterparts. They were better than plan achromats but not as good as the better plan fluorites from major makers. They'...

Re: Leica DMRB- which lenses and prisms for DIC
As I understand it the difference between B and B1 or D and D1 (etc.) prisms is in the shear angles. The letter alone (A, B, C, D . . .) is a balance between 3D effect and ultimate resolution. The B1 (etc.) designation (as I understand it) has a bit less shear, a bit less contrast and 3D effect, but...

Re: Leica DMRB- which lenses and prisms for DIC
The first eBay listing for the 10 PL Fluotar looks good. I believe it wants a K2. They do show up now and then. I suspect, but don't know, that the 10x Plan Apo wants a K2 as well. Note that you're not getting higher resolution than the same .30 N.A. Plan Fluor. You get slightly better correction of...

Re: Leica DMRB- which lenses and prisms for DIC
The older "Delta" optic type DMRB has black lettering - like yours. Unmarked Leica objectives and those with an HCX will match the tube lens a bit better. You do want objectives that specify a letter (A,B,C,D...) on the objective or very early on a * to be compatible with DIC. If you find an "HC" ob...

Re: Averaging condenser and objective numerical aperture when predicting resolution
The long-standing relationship of numerical aperture relationship to resolution is basically a geometric one - assuming every photon of light at some wavelength/energy is fully constrained within some cone of light. By that simple math, and using ray tracing, I think we all agree that (whether it is...
