Hi Brian,
one drawback of the FM31 is it's low build, not really good to use for more than minutes. Other field microscopes are much better in this area.
And when you include the necessary accessories the size of the instrument might not be so important any more.

Re: Any Bresser XPD-101 field microscope users?
Hi Brian, field microscopes seem to be a tiny market nowadays and at this price it is not very appealing for occasional use. Do you have a special application in mind? There are several alternatives, some quite frequently and cheaply available. When you search for fm31 or field microscope in this fo...

Micro algae database and image collection is online!
Hi together, a former member of our MIKRO Hamburg group spent a lot of effort in photographing and identifying micro algae. I have had his 35mm slide collection scanned and after a lot of work with connecting image and database you can find the collection on the website of our main society: https://...

Re: Disposable blades with Cambridge rocking microtome, anybody?
Congratulations, nice sections!
The OLFA LBB blades have two bevels per side, the final micro bevels including an angle of probably 35°. So the body of the blade should be in a bit more than 17,5° to the movement plane of the block.

Nice camera adaper! It really is useful to be able to design things like this. Especially camera adaptations to microscopes can be difficult if one has to rely only on ready made parts. Before I would machine such an adapter I would just print a beefier version. This hollow stuff is fairly time cons...

Zeiss Jena and Zeiss West are close in their colour correction. There may be slight differences in the planar correction. Depending on the cameras chip size it will only cover the inner part of the image of the projective. 2.5 usually fits for full frame, 1,67 for APS-C, bigger numbers for medium or...

Re: Oil immersion lens for reflected light!
Hi, your setup looks good and should work well. The tube length will be over 160mm so without intermediate lenses that compensate for this 160mm objectives won't give a good image and be parfocal. Your setup could be able to provide Epi dark field but your objectives are only for bright field. Here ...

Hi Anton, I have a Zeiss Epiplan HD 100 /1,25 oil Epi bright/dark field objective. Illumination is by means of the Epi condenser from above, either through the objective lenses or over the ring mirror. I haven't found a use for it so far, but is for sure useful for inspection of very flat surfaces. ...

Hi together, Rolf actually uses eye- and field lens of an KPL10 low eyepoint on the barrel or a KPL 8 low eyepoint. This is only a change of distance between the lens groups. For Leitz and Olympus he ended up with a more complex lens- and barrel mix. By partially screwing in the lenses one could do ...

Hi,
you might have a look at Rolf's new camera adaptation method: https://microscopyofnature.com/micropho ... -eyepieces
He uses combinations of standard eyepiece components to form a projective. I have tested his method and it works very well.

Re: Using a pair of cameras with a stereo microscope
Hi Michael,
interesting project!
What I'm not sure about is how the focussing should be done: Moving the entire stereo microscope head back and forth or the individual optics on their inclined axis? How would the stereo image look like when focussing, natural or giving headaches?

Re: Could it be scratched?
Hi,
I'm fairly sure that these are no scratches. My guess is that you have old gummed up immersion oil on the lens, it got sticky from cleaning but wasn't removed and a bit of paper tissue got stuck.
Do you have a loupe or stereo microscope to inspect the front lenses?

Hi, nice sections and first stains! That parsley petiole is also a very nice object with a good mix of different structures. Safranine is a regresive stain when used in higher concentrations, it stains everything and you have to remove from where you don't want it. If used in very low concentrations...

Re: Using a pair of cameras with a stereo microscope
The pair of camers will only show one image plane sharp at a time. For a good 3D- view one would need two stacked images from different angles. The typical focus drive of stereo microscopes and the inclined light pathes wil make it difficult to get a good result. As an alternative I would suggest to...

The diatoms on Kemps slide are of the bigger variety. So if you wan't to find diatoms and there are only small ones you will need a better combination of magnification and image quality. For sample collecting I would suggest to make a sieve from 25-50µ stainless mesh to be able to concentrate the sa...

Hi,
many diatoms are very small, smaller than e.g. 30µm. To see them you need a sharp image and for this a well made slide. Which microscope and objective are you using, how is your lighting set up and do you use a cover slip?

Hi,
nice sections! I like the dark field image better than the phasec ontrast one. For botanic sections phase doesn't offer additional detail and adds artifacts. Next you might try staining. Wacker W3A is quick and nice.
