Asplanchna or Tricks of the light

I found some nice Rotifers of the genus Asplanchna a few months ago. Since they are quite big, they made a great opportunity to try my DIY polarized system, which is very limited due to the lack of power of the lamp of my current scope. The sequence of the video is the following: 1- Oblique illumina...

Very interesting, it looks to me like some sort of Euglonoid. The green is very intense, did you make some post processing?

Re: Demodex - Arachnids that live on you face

Very cool! By clear tape do you mean something like scotch tape? Yes exactly. The clearer the better because the tape gets attached to your slide. Microbe Hunter has a great video showing how to do this, I followed those instructions. Yeah, I saw that one where he teared half of his eyebrow too :lo...

Hi Tim,

That is a very interesting scene you got. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know much about amoebas, but I think Vampirella acts more like a suctorian on algae:

Re: Why don’t pictures include technical data like powers, etc?

I think it's is useful to add technical data to the images/videos posted here. Magnification can be tricky though, since there are many factors involved. Listing the equipment used offers to the observer a general context. I wouldn't go as far as saying that a picture or video shared without technic...

Suctoria attacking Nassula Ornata

I found an interesting scene yesterday. When I first saw this Nassula Ornata, I thought it was damaged and about to die, but a more detailed view revealed that the big ciliate had a colony of Suctoria attached to it. The tentacles of the Suctoria do no show on these pictures, but they were readily v...

Re: Lacrymaria eating smaller lacrymaria!

The first scene is phase contrast but the phase turret is rotated between a phase annulus and no phase annulus. It's about 85% toward the phase annulus. This rotation does give me some oblique lighting which helps with my contrast in some cases. It does look like a different species. When I follow ...

Re: Lacrymaria eating smaller lacrymaria!

It's a jungle out there! The big Lacrymaria looks like another species, the neck is very wide compared to the body and lacks of its characteristic flexibility. Do you know something about this? Which scene is Phase Contrast? They look like oblique and bright field to me. Thanks for sharing and congr...
