Re: Darkfield Illumination

You are certainly getting your money's worth out of that scope/camera. I am curious why you say that DF lowers resolution? It was my understanding the BF achieved the highest resolution possible, while others illumination techniques helped to gain contrast at the expense of a lower resolution. But ...

Re: Darkfield Illumination

Those are very good. Curious what condenser and 20X objective you are using. Thanks. I'm using very basic stuff, just the stock condenser of an Amscope b120 (re-branded here in Argentina) and a 20 x achromat. I noticed that you can tell right away that this is a cheap scope in bright field, but it ...

Re: Darkfield Illumination

I have been usign home made DF filters for a few years now. I find they work fine up to 200x. For best photographic results, set the brightness of your scope really high and leave the camera a bit underxposed. I'm sharing some unedited examples with you. Of course, you can enhance a lot these result...

Re: Nassula Ornata

Beautiful. Is that the natural coloring of its 'inside'? I see you use darkfield. But nothing like polarisation or any trick to have the colors stand out so well? Nice find! Thank you, Marcel. This is just dark field with a home made filter. Colors came out really nice because it was a very colorfu...

Nassula Ornata

It has been a while since I last made some pond water microscopy. Yesterday I got a very active sample and almost immediately found this beautiful Nassula Ornata. I had to take about 25 short videos to get 30 seconds of steady view, where both the contractile vacuole and the oral basket could be spo...

Re: "Scorpion!"

@Javier - I live in Utah, with the Yellow Devils and various assorted fun flora and fauna! Yeah, I wouldn't want to step on one, it's painful but not fatal. I've seen some websites claiming these make good pets, but I'm not a scorpion pet type person. Cats are ok, especially if they're the neighbor...

Re: Best size objective for Pond life?

Absurdly, one of the reasons some people avoid oil immersion is because they are too cheap to pay for the oil?! In my case, not using the 100 x oil objective is a matter optical quality. I'm happy with the optical quality of my DIN achromatic objectives up to 40 x given the cost of my microscope, b...

Re: Pond water aquarium for home

Very interesting!

Do you have the chance to make a small birth-bath near your home? I'm guessing adding that water would add a lot of diversity to your aquarium.

It is great that you already have Stentors there, they are beautiful and interesting to observe.

I loved the last image, "Enchanted forest". Soy sauce crystals are beautiful and very easy to observe under the microscope, especially under oblique illumination. I'm surprised they are not one of the most popular specimens for beginners.

Re: First experience with Vit C crystals

Muchas gracias, Luis Carlos!

I tried a different technique yesterday. I heated the slide and got a rapid crystallization, ending up with quite different crystals shapes. I really like this one.
