Wow, very nice finding!

Suctoria are ciliates after all, right?

Re: Nassula Ornata

Beautiful. Is that the natural coloring of its 'inside'? I see you use darkfield. But nothing like polarisation or any trick to have the colors stand out so well? Nice find! Thank you, Marcel. This is just dark field with a home made filter. Colors came out really nice because it was a very colorfu...

Nassula Ornata

It has been a while since I last made some pond water microscopy. Yesterday I got a very active sample and almost immediately found this beautiful Nassula Ornata. I had to take about 25 short videos to get 30 seconds of steady view, where both the contractile vacuole and the oral basket could be spo...

Re: "Scorpion!"

@Javier - I live in Utah, with the Yellow Devils and various assorted fun flora and fauna! Yeah, I wouldn't want to step on one, it's painful but not fatal. I've seen some websites claiming these make good pets, but I'm not a scorpion pet type person. Cats are ok, especially if they're the neighbor...

One thing I have noticed about these guys is that they very often gather together in large groups. Do you have any information on this issue?

Re: Best size objective for Pond life?

Absurdly, one of the reasons some people avoid oil immersion is because they are too cheap to pay for the oil?! In my case, not using the 100 x oil objective is a matter optical quality. I'm happy with the optical quality of my DIN achromatic objectives up to 40 x given the cost of my microscope, b...

Re: Pond water aquarium for home

Very interesting!

Do you have the chance to make a small birth-bath near your home? I'm guessing adding that water would add a lot of diversity to your aquarium.

It is great that you already have Stentors there, they are beautiful and interesting to observe.

I loved the last image, "Enchanted forest". Soy sauce crystals are beautiful and very easy to observe under the microscope, especially under oblique illumination. I'm surprised they are not one of the most popular specimens for beginners.

Very nice, I had my first go too a couple of months ago (not as nice as some of the growth shown in your video ). Out of curiosity; How do you get the zooming out effect... Is it an Iphone App or was it done in something else? Thank you, Chas! I add the zooming effect using Davinci Resolve. It is c...

Muchas gracias, Luis Carlos!

I tried a different technique yesterday. I heated the slide and got a rapid crystallization, ending up with quite different crystals shapes. I really like this one.

First experience with Vit C crystals

A few days ago I got some pure Vitamin C to experiment with polarized light. It was a beautiful experience, the combination of light patterns and illumination seems endless. I still have not managed the preparation technique, since I don't achieve an even crystallization on the slide. Nevertheless, ...

Re: Joining from Argentina

Welcome, Christian! Where are you from? We tried to start an amateur microscopy community in Argentina this year, but after several months we gave up due to the lack of interest. Hope to see you around! Javier. Hi Javier, I'm from Ciudad de Buenos Aires (Saavedra). I'm surprised you found enough ca...
