Re: Recommend grease?

Does anyone have experience with Dow Corning Molykote 7348 for the mechanical stage X-Y motion or condenser focusing rails ? it is a dark pink/brown grease, described as: "High temperature silicone grease for rolling-element bearings. Applications – Used successfully on bearings in driers and on con...

Re: Darkfield photography

DF is partially a product of refraction, which causes chroma...DF is essentially a black and white image, so colour variations are more defined and more apparent. One way to get rid of the CA and perhaps improve the image would be to use a narrow bandpass filter, that transmits light within a narro...

Re: Question for Pipette users

Thanks Hobbyst46 and mnmyco If you find that you like a volume but not the tip opening, simply cut the tip and make the opening larger. Good idea. That will make the 5-200µl tips more versatile. Sorry for the delay. I have verified that two styles of tips fit the P-200 exactly. They are shown below...

Re: Olympus BH2 - matching Phase components

If in doubt whether the listed objective on the market is long barrel or not: By default, phase objectives described as for a BH-2 should be long barrel. But AFAIK "LB" is not marked on the objective. So to verify, I would compare the length and printed/engraved specs on the objective to those of kn...

Have long been searching a USB-HDMI communication protocol and cable, but never heard the magic word "MHL".

Re: pls help with recc. a microscope

Hello Lisa The idea of using the phone as camera in your case is great. About a year ago I started with a cellphone for microscopy. I struggled with it since the adapter that I purchased did not provide easy and reproducible alignment of the cellphone camera with the eyepieces. So I devised a soluti...

Re: Magnetcially securing a smartphone to an eyepiece adapter

To clarify the mechanics a bit. When the microscope lamp is on and all setup for convenient viewing (brightfield, open iris aperture), placing a frosted glass or oiled paper or any translucent plastic above the eyepiece will reveal the eyepoint - marked as asterisk in the drawing below, where the li...

Under vaccuum some mountants develop even more bubbles. To penetrate hollow particles it is said that repeated applications of a partial vaccuum for short periods is best. I do it that way but I haven't tried to proove this theory. There are three possible sources of bubbles in mounting. One is the...

I have an alcohol lamp buried somewhere. Twice I purchased cheap 18x18mm coverslips (made in China) from local supply houses, and twice found them to be stained, as if it was dust, but it was permanent whitish spots. Got angry, and tried to clean them with water (failed) alcohol (failed) then liqui...

Re: Question for Pipette users

Shame on me for forgetting to verify!! Hopefully on Sunday I will contact some colleagues and inspect tip diameters. Yet, I think that these 10ul tips will not fit on the P200 Pipeteman dispenser, since they are too small. Also, the tips in the photos are packed "randomly". There are "racked tips", ...

According to Wikipedia, these specific ants can survive dryness. How dry can it be ? On the other hand, if I understand correctly, the practical difficulty is maintaining an appropriate humidity for ants, without condensation that interferes with photography and is even dangerous for the ants. You definitely need a phase condenser in order to get phase contrast images. The phase condenser includes the phase stops for three phases as well as brightfield with iris diaphragm. I think that many years ago, the Galen microscope was a Cambridge Instruments model, made in China.

Hello Dan Ok hobbyst lets say we are talking about normal human skin which is less than 0.5 cm but we talk on its highest depth which is close to 0.5cm as u wrote. If I understand correctly, you would like to explore human skin non-invasively. I know almost nothing about it, but, as mentioned before...

Re: Can someone recommend please a microscope that can view deep inside skin ,at least 2 c"m deep please.

Human skin is less than 0.5cm thick AFAIK, whale skin is 35cm thick according to Wikipedia. Human skin is very faintly transparent to visible light. Inside tissues are probably even less transparent. So objects that lie "2 cm inside skin" are not for visible light microscopy but can be viewed with o...

Re: Inverted microscope vs upright microscope

Having used both types, upright and inverted, I would add: IMO, the main issue with inverted is due to the required LWD objectives and condenser, as mentioned by Apochronaut. Another issue with inverted, less important but still significant, is the cleaning of immersion oil from the objectives and n...
