On a Day Off
It's an unpredictable misery. Even on a quiet day when there is no one to disturb you. A small switch is turned and the lights of day flicker and threaten. How long has it been since you were scared? It's a state in decline. It makes some demands. You have to be in a priveleged state of vulnerabilit...

Two Sides of the Reality Wall
There is a tiny screen door near the edge of the second panel: click it. What if you are half blind and can't see it? What if you can see it but don't know what to do? What if the instructions are murky and not correct? I see you're out there watching me waving my arms. I say goodbye and you can't h...

Doctor's Visit
When the doctor said, "You didn't die, Donny. There will be tomorrow." I looked at her with glazed eyes. "This place isn't so great but it made good children." The sun was shining. The Spring was going to start. I rubbed shoulders with fear and the contact felt good. Fear does not have a cold body. ...

Internet Problem
My internet provider decided to upgrade its services. I couldn't get the new site installed because I couldn't get the old password right (I guess I lost it). They are not patient about such problems. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. I am just an ditzy old man but I love you guys.

I can't imagine anything like that to be deliberate when it comes to these organisms. You honor them with the question.

Carrot Peel
The carrot is technically part of the root system of the plant. It is not a typical root because it has a lot of sugar in it. The cell structure resembles that of a fruit. Anyway, the carrot occupies a category all its own.

The biofilm covers the entire surface of the mudpuddle. It consists of this blanket of biological material which supports the animate residents of the mudpuddle. The populations seems to have stabilized. The animate population seems to be drifting through the nutrient solution without effort. https:...

Pipes, Tubes, Connectors in Infant Grass
Grass is probably the plant least appreciated. In fact, grass is a wonderful, inticate biochemical machine. It has micorscopic features that any industrial engineers would envy on a miraculously small scale. Looking at this construction fills me with wonder and admiration. I do recognize these desig...

Biofilm Here to Stay
I see the protists moving around but rarely see any direct contact between them. My guess is that they are absorbing nutrition from proteins floating freely in the water or they are being fed by invisible nutrients--perhaps absorbed directly from the water. In that way they act like plants. https://...

Ambiguity Complexity and Confusion in a Leaf
As amateur students of living structure, we sometimes find the structures we look at to be very straightforward and predictable. However, more often the structures are buried inside each other and under each other and are ducidly hard to see. In this small piece of rubber plant leaf, sometimes the r...

Three Views of Latest Biome
Life in the Densest Deeper Water Layer At the deepest water level the organisms differ from those further up in the water column. This is the place where completely saturated vegetation sinks. Many of the protists are larger and move less. They also tend to be more flexible in shape, although I didn...

The Re-Manufacture
All the parts that go into living substance (it's hard to know what to call it at this stage) are spread out on the watery work table. Somehow it is all being transformed and consumed. All we see is the agents of the change but we never actually see the process. Life converts from vegetable substanc...

A Leaf That Stops Being a Leaf
A small branch of one of the houseplants had been disconnected. The flow of its vital substances had been discontinued and it has been disowned by the plant. I put it under the microscope just at the time when the life of the plant was being negotiated and reconfigured. Part of the plant is only rec...

In the first pictures the surface of the plant is only minimally exposed to the microbes. In the second section the microbes has...

Biofilm Reaches Stasis
The biofilm has covered the entire water surface. In these pictures, the densest biofilm has been diluted by adding some free liquid. The variety of protists remains much the same as before. Bacteria density is higher. A large cake of solid vegetable matter floats on the surface--slowly eking nutrie...

Cell Form Breakdown at an Injury Point
This is more complicated than I thought. A plant on the lawn was injured with the result that part of the leaf structure was deformed. I could see the deformity with the naked eye, but when I looked at it under magnification the injury point was not that sharp. There were gradations in the form of o...

I think it was the addition into the biome of some more sugary vegetation. The population of the biome increased dramatically and the biofilm has become more dense--the surface tension in the biome has become more elastic and stronger. Some new varieties of large round protists have appeared. https:...

Loss of the Organic Look
From the back lawn I cut a leaf whose circulation was broken and which was transforming into a dead leaf. When I photographed it some of the leaf still looked organic and some of it was quite dried. The difference between these cells was stark. There was an injury point one side of which still showe...

Eventually the biofilm became so dense that motion in the vicinity was blocked. Thus, nutrition and essential chemistry was impossible. I had added small pieces of sweet fruit to the biome. The sugary chemistry may have caused mass murder.

I added some orange skin to the biome. The sugar may have speeded growth in the colony. There are more round protists than usual as well. I didn't see any amebas or larger micro animals. I suspect they may begin appearing when the colony is a little older. I wish I knew how these organisms time thei...

Long threads of translucent fibers are tied together in various ways to make a celery stalk. The threads are strong and they tangle and knot each other to make a rigid structure. Sometimes the knots of threading are so tightly woven together that you can't see the threads. Sometimes you can see the ...

I get to know it. I mean smears of it or drops or chunks or particles of it spread through time or make pieces that bump. Sometimes they seem to move on their own, these things. How can I grasp it? Pressed in lines they create time. Lining up in bits of silence, bits of vacuum followed by chunks, as...

These sweet little carrots have fat-looking sugary cells. When cut the cells excrete a gas which fogs the microscope lens under the highest magnification, when the lens is close to the carrot tissue. The cells are thick with sugary fluids. They are shapeless for the most part. https://youtu.be/TkgAX...

The population of the biome has reached maturity. The population hasn't changed much. The numbers may have stopped increasing and the range of species is stable. I added some different vegetation today to see if that affects the kinds of organisms in the mudpuddle.
