Re: trying to change magnification on an old American Optical Forty
The eyepieces maybe, sometimes these didn't use conventional eyepirces but you might find 15x eyepieces for an AO stereostar fit and work fine (the size would be 23.2mm though, not 24). That will only enlarge the existing image but not resolve more detail. The objectives will not be to any particula...

Re: trying to change magnification on an old American Optical Forty
Thr AO forty is a student scope, badically a vety simpligied version of their main stereo line. I am not sure if there's much customization possible on them.

Re: Mystery Wild photo tube
It must be similar in broad strokes, but the queation is wht optics it was made for. Thr lmscope adapter is basically a teleconverter, it has some enlarging optics built in to grab the image and put it on your dslr's sensor. All I can think is that Wild must have had a projection style photo eyepiec...

Re: Mystery Wild photo tube
This would be from the 80s, some people from the 80s are still alive. Your standard Wild photo port would be 38mm in ID, thrn insert an adapter which takes a 23mm or 30mm eyepiece (or later, a specialized photoeyepiece for stereos) and has a 40mm OD for parts like this to clamp onto. Usually it woul...

Re: Mystery Wild photo tube
They'd fit on a standard photo mount with an eyepiece slot and 40mm od, but they don't seem to have a mount for a lens. I don't think Wild ever made projective eyepieces, but maybe they did at some point?

Yeah, no dice there, the m400 has its own special set of adapters and the m420 takes normal 38mm adapters up top.

Here's an overview of what it looks like fully set up: https://i.imgur.com/GGNgf7T.png Let's start with the BH2-UMA illuminator. At the far end you have the lamp house which...

Re: Nikon SMZ vs Chinese Copy in a battle of the titans
In this thread I mentioned not being able to use the third party camera mount as-is and needing to modify it because of flare. I wanted to note I have been unable to replicate this and the unmodified one I have seems to work just as well as the modified one. I am not sure where the flare was coming ...

My gripe is mostly with bolts in the later SMZ stereos. They're standard metric bolts so even hardware store replacements work fine.

With newer nikon screws they have a good chance of stripping even with the right driver. They have found the softest, butteryest metal possible for them.

Re: Spec for Objectives: Terminology
DoF is depth of field, which is what you want (directly related to numerical aperture). Depth of focus happens after the objective and is basically how thick the plane is where the image is in focus. Higher NA optics have a narrower depth of field, but a woder depth of focus, which is why high mag o...

Re: DIC Question
Oh yeah, mixed up my terms there. Typically these are set up with one prism being objective specific and the other being more general (or with epi dic either one per objective or one slider for all). With the olympus system the slider goes above the objectives and is the nonspecific one, while the c...

Re: DIC Question
Yeah, it looks to me like the nikon nosepiece prisms are 1k or 1.6k usd depending on n1 or n2, and the condenser prisms are 1k and up, while the olympus ones on eBay are 1.2k for the slider and 250ish for the objective prisms. Not a huge savings for sure unless you want to make a full dic setup with...

Re: Leica/Wild M420/M400 on a Nikon toolmaker(?)
My setup is similar, though I don't have the focusable stage. Seems like a neat idea. I doubt you'll find someone who did this specific combination. If you can machine aluminum yourself it should be pretty easy to try it out, and aside from getting loctited bolts removed nothing permanent has to be ...

Re: DIC Question
Looking again the slider is a normal doc slider, and a couple of the objective prisms aren't marked for water immersion. But of course that all requires more research.

Re: Leica/Wild M420/M400 on a Nikon toolmaker(?)
That's odd--any idea what component on the Wild stand may be out of wack? I could share my measurements of the dovetail that I used to design my own adapter, or even make a variation on the model if you can take measurements of the spacing between the bolt holes. I had it made via xometry but it was...

Some olynpus prisms just went up on UK eBay, including condenser prisms and a nosepiece slider, not cheap but cheaper than thorlabs. The condenser prisms are mostly for specialized water immersion objectives though.

Re: Leica/Wild M420/M400 on a Nikon toolmaker(?)
From a mechanical standpoint it is not hard. You'd want to remove the existing focus mount from the m420 by removing the three bolts that hold it on (which may be loctited in so proceed cautiously), remove the head/nosepiece mount from the measurescope by loosening two bolts and sliding it off the d...

Re: High end Chinese microscope with DIC and Phase
The motic is definitely epi dic. Kind of funny they're pushing it on that series instead of their (quite good) mitutoyo clone series. Maybe it's unusual for customers to want both long working distances and epi dic. Not to state the obvious but an epi DIC setup is a lot easier to get or assemble use...

Nice pair. The Leica Galen was made in China and probably patterened off the ch2 so it might be fun to see if there is some parts compatibility.
