Re: Surprise from the ice

There is a "rule of thumb" for how thick the ice should be to support people and vehicles, but I have forgotten.
Two inches (53mms) to support one (small) person but I am not going to try it.

Eight inches (21 Cms) for a small car. Problem is the ice is not uniform across the lake. Oops :o

Rotifers

Some Rotifers. First two are Rotaria (I think but will defer to more knowledgeable members) Third one may be Euchlanis. All with the 20X obj. Rotaria was ~450 Ums – almost ½ mm. http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss152/jtallon2/IMG_0004-Edited-JPEG_zpslmcvkvpt.jpg http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/...

Still haven’t found anything as easy or more spectacular than Tylenol.
Those are nice. Agree about Tylenol but also try dish washer detergent, sugar, Comet, Epsom salts, etc.

Apochronaut,
Was the lighting oblique
almost always (except with dark field) as I think it brings out extra detail.

Two images of a lateral section (LS) both stained with red food colouring. First one is with the 40X obj. and shows cell structure and nucleus. Re: Closterium comparison

The difference in the detail between the images speaks for itself.
No comparison. I have an Amscope 3MP USB camera that I never use once I set up my Canon.
The Amscope camera is better than nothing and is good intro to micro-photography for someone just starting out.

Poinsettia

OK, to copy John B. here are two images of a poinsettia stem TS with red food dye and TBO stain. Both with the 10X obj. First one is dark field. Not nearly as good as John's but shows the difference between live cells and cleansed sections between his image and this one. Second image is same area in...

Very very good and yes, more. Really brings out the detail.

I have also done some dark field images of transverse sections (Not as good as this one) and based on your good results I will have to try some more.

Looks like that 2.5X obj. was a good acquisition.

Hobbyst46, Rotifers.

Quite an interesting setup. Much better than just holding the phone over the eyepiece. Looking forward to more images.
