Great image, very nicely detailed
It was a dark field stop that was placed significantly offset.
Still counts

Re: Diatoms II

Thanks zzffnn and charlie What were the "ups and downs" about? Mostly setting-up complications, there are more steps to follow and hence get wrong. Orienting the sliders is by eye/feel and I had never used DIC before. Additionally since this was a test I did not fix the slide holders in position whi...

Many thanks rnabholz, Crater Eddie, KurtM and houstontx.

This was basically a test to see if it was going work, pleased it does. :)
Will wait for more sliders and another turret before I set it up properly.

Thanks Rylander, it does look similar.
The shape must have certain aerodynamic qualities and in fact hydrodynamic too, I suppose. I know some of the people wearing paisley shirts in the past certainly thought they had.

Very nice video.

Made the mistake of attempting a before and after bacteria comparison by circling them with a pen on my screen.
Minor panic as I thought for a while it was not going to come off! Turns out the ones they are eating are not quite visible.

Nice clean up. Perfect winter project.

Re: Microscope for photography?

I would prefer to buy locally & new in Australia just in case there are any issues. Would like to stick to the budget of the above lens but don't mind spending a little more if there's much more value or if I really won't get sharp images with these microscopes. First rule for buying anything, and ...

There might be one or two be in the vacuum-cleaner dust bag.

Re: Spirogyra

Everyone's favorite filamentous alga. Always a treat. A possible reason Crater Eddie is having problems: In ditches the amount of species declines when the water becomes very eutrophic (nutrient rich) . Other filamentous algae then replace it, like Cladophora, Vaucheria and Enteromorpha. Link to an ...

Re: About COL

It is possible to achieve Phase and COL without a Phase Telescope, though it is a bit hit and miss, what with squinting down the eyepiece tube or trying to decide by the effects if it is properly centered. I would get a Phase Telescope if you can, not only does it make alignment for Phase and COL qu...

Re: Latest iteration of my Zeiss Standard

The Optovar is more than a magnification changer, it is also a Bertrand lens and an analyser. I changed the Arm it had which came with a fixed 4 objective turret for an Arm with an interchangeable turret. I believe the model was likely an RA (these are early Standards that came with fixed 4 or 5 obj...

Re: Latest iteration of my Zeiss Standard

Hi KurtM To be honest I do not have all the Zeiss models down pat, as there seems to be some overlap. These are the most common models: The Standard 14 has an internal illuminator with a rheostat on the base. The Standard 16 has a illuminator that fits into the back of the base, it works on an exter...
