Re: LED lighting....why the hate?

In my personal view a good Cree LED gives a very nice illumination for the average variety of uses. Louise posted an LED spectrum that is quite typical. White LEDs are actually blue emitters with a fluorescence layer. Apparently they can't reach "white" without the dip at 500nm at the moment with th...

@microbob:I plan to use it in the field as well. I would like to begin taking macros. I currently use my iPhone11 with a Moment 10x macro lens, which is fantastic, but also only 10x. For field use a DSLM is a lot more compact and light than a DSLR. Also the future of DSLRs is very dim and it is que...

Re: Plankton Net Reviews & Discussion

It actually would increase the performance of the net when there were a screened exit at the bottom. But in practice when there is a great plancton concentration at the entrance of the bottle it will be good inside. I like it to have more than one bottle and some lids and this would be difficult to ...

Do you consider to use the camera for normal photography in the field too?

Re: Hund Wetzlar replacement condenser???

Hi, Hund is carrying on the microscope production of the former company Will, in Wetzlar where Leitz is too. They make good routine instruments for medical work etc. and offer a good service, also to amateurs. They have a good stock of spares for their old models too. There might be an adjustable st...

Re: Thinking about 3d printer

Hi Greg,
the process is like this:
3D-CAD outputs *.STL
Slicer outputs *.gcode

So on your SD card should be a file ABC.gcode
Perhaps Cura has created *.gcode files but put them in a different folder than you expected.

Re: Eyepieces Zeiss.

Hi Sabatini, what you have there are Leitz (160 or 170mm)and Zeiss Jena 160mm microcopes. For the Leitz microscope you need Leitz Periplan eyepieces as they contain a certain degree of colour correction. With Zeiss Jena it is a bit more difficult. Your objectives will be on one of the last 160mm ser...

Re: Thinking about 3d printer

Hi Greg, to make real use of a 3D-printer you will ned to learn 3D-modeling. Some models can be fairly simple, others have details that are not so easy to design. Are you prepared to invest time in learning to use a 3D-CAD program? Next step would be to use a slicer program to convert the model into...

I don't know whether this has already been mentioned, but there is Histoclear available as a Xylene substitute. I think user mrsonchus has mentioned using is successfully. It probably is based on orange peel oil so there is room for experimentation. I use orange peel oil to wipe away paraffin redidu...

Thr type of tube will help to decide how heavy the camera can be. With a vertical photo port it can be heavy and/or build up high, with an inclined binocular tube a lighter, shorter camera is better. Very few advanced micro photographers use USB eyepiece cameras though this is not impossible. Practi...

Hi Mary, welcome to the forum! Using a microscope is similar to using a pair of binoculars. So if you have access to one you can try how using one or two eyepieces fits to you vision. With average eyes most people prefer binocular microscoeps today, but this was only from the 1950s on. Before that a...

Re: LOMO MƂP-1 stand problem

This clockwork mechanism is durable but doesn't stand real mistreatment. Since the 1930s there will have been slight variations in the Zeiss Jena and LOMO production, so spares might look similar, but don't really fit well. The teeth are fine so they have to engage fully to stay intact for longer. S...

Hi,
do you know Wolfgangs LOMO-Infothek: http://www.mikroskopfreunde-nordhessen.de/lomo.php
You can find there the probably biggest archive abbout russian microscopes, it is likely that there is a document which describes your objective.

Lubrication: The blades are not lubricated or get a fine coating with graphite powder. Due to the big contact surface oild or grease would make them hard to move. It may be that the ring doesn' t move too well in the barrel so a very small amount of light grease could help, but so that it can't cree...

On my Zeiss Jena NF I have the choice to swing in a ground glass or not. In one case the filament is the light source, in the other the ground glass right before the lamp. If the ground glass is not switchable it is part of the light path and should stay in there.
