Re: Mystery objective with crosshairs/fixture on front lens
Thank you all for your inputs! I think it is probably an interferometer objective as Scarodactyl suggested. It looks like a Mirau-type objective as shown in Figure 5 at https://www.microscopyu.com/microscopy- ... rferometry

Mystery objective with crosshairs/fixture on front lens
I recently came across this objective while looking at a disused GE DeltaVision OMX TIRF-SIM super-resolution microscope. Re: Oil Immersion - Cleaning technique
I just read an interesting paragraph on Nikon MicroscopyU about an unexpected positive effect of not thoroughly cleaning immersion oil when using heated objectives for live-cell imaging, especially on inverted microscopes where the oil can flow downwards onto the objective barrel: "The only negative...

Re: Amalgamation of dust
There is a good chance the carpet was cleaned at some point in the past. Much of the history could already have been lost or hard to trace it's current whereabouts, also it could have been cross contaminated with landfill waste. That would certainly make the analysis even more problematic and inter...

Re: What’s an economical way to get into metallurgical microscopy?
My strategy was to add a vertical illuminator to an existing transmitted light microscope so it can do both metallurgy and biology (and others). This might not be cheaper than getting a purely metallurgical microscope, but it could be "economical" in the sense that you have an instrument that is muc...

Re: Amalgamation of dust
I think this could be really interesting as it appears to give a lot of potential scope for identifying different types of fibres (synthetic vs natural, what synthetic materials they are made of or which plant species they came from) using the crossed polarizers and retardation plate (or variable co...

Re: ringing cements
Hi Milou and Idflan, No problem, I am glad the polyurethane was of some interest. Answering Idflan's query, it has been three and a half years since I made those slides and they still seem fine and unchanged (I examined one of them under the microscope recently). I keep the slides vertically in a sl...

Re: Airborne Microplastics
It's been about three weeks since I put the slide out near the front door with a drop of olive oil, and I put it under the microscope yesterday. There were particles and fibres although not very many, as Singapore is a city with relatively good pollution control of particles of optical microscopy si...

Welcome! I read with interest Dubious' comments about PWM - so that's how the bicycle light adjusts intensity! Perhaps one could use a couple of neutral density filters in this case to adjust brightness, while keeping the LED permanently at full power? I do this for my tungsten halogen lamp, as it h...

Re: What is Unit Distance Per Fine Focus Knob Increment??
-- I tried measuring the depth of a slide, using top and bottom markings, without a coverglass. The slide was 1,130 μm. I had to rotate the FF knob so many times that it was hard to count, so I abandoned that and went back to the coverslip marked on top and bottom with a marker. There are tiny spec...

Please forgive me if I have misinterpreted your description, but : It appears that you are trying to measure through glass. … if so, your results will inevitably be distorted by the Refractive Index of that medium. Re: Terminology for types of fine focus mechanisms?
On my Radical RPL-3T, the coarse and fine focus knobs are not only separate but also turn in opposite directions (for the same direction of stage movement) for unknown reasons. This makes it very confusing and annoying when you switch between the two and also increases the risk of accidentally smash...

Re: What is Unit Distance Per Fine Focus Knob Increment??
You may also be able to find the information in the microscope’s user manual. If you need to be sure of accuracy, I recommend calibrating it using a broken coverslip to see how many graduations of the fine focus knob it takes to get from the lower surface to the upper surface of the coverslip using ...

Thanks for a very informative and interesting topic. I have little knowledge to contribute but some of my personal experience. Forensic feather microscopy of birds from Southeast Asia
For my latest mini-project I decided to explore feather microstructures, which are sometimes used by forensic investigators to identify bird species from the feathers left behind. Although there are lots of micrographs of feathers in general, very few of them actually show clearly the nodes and pigm...

Re: Best practices and construction for dust covers
I think that, if indeed condensation is likely (for any climatic/environmental reason), keeping the microscopes warm is the most practical and economical way. Less nuisance than dehumidifiers of any sort. HEPA filters are an overkill, IMHO. I can't prove it definitively but my impression is that in...
