Brainless here. Must have posted that on a day when I thought "0.17" was inches and not mm. My apologies. Thanks for all the responses that cleared that up!

Question about coverslip thickness

Several posts have mentioned the critical nature of cover glass thickness. I have a box of 22x40mm labeled as "#1", so I measured a few to see how close they are to the recommended 0.17 inch thickness and got 0.06" on several. Can that be right? I compared to an automotive feeler gauge to be sure I ...

Re: book or website about prepared slides

Hello Alonso, I bought box of 100 botany slides several months ago and don't know what many of them are. One way to learn is if the slide label is specific enough, look the name up online and you may find a description and/or labeled diagrams. I've done this with some of mine and it helps you apprec...

Re: Are there such a thing as cheap starter objectives for a Leica DM LM?

I bought an Amscope or similar 20x Plan for my Olympus and I've been happy with it. Cheap was my main criterion, too. Figured I could return it if it was awful.

Re: After a false start, my first scope! Olympus CH-2

I love my CH-2. It came with the E A4, EA10, and EA40X objectives. I've since added a generic 20X, Swapped the A10 for a DPlan 10, changed to a 5 position nosepiece, and added a 40PL phase objective. At some point, I may replace the EA40 with a 100x oil but I have that on another scope right now. Go...

Re: Ligustrum spp. TS safranin-o stain

I will say that mounting these sections for permanent mounts in clear nail polish or PVA glue (clear Elmer's) results in some bleeding of the stain into the mounting medium.

Re: Swift 380T - 20x objective recommendations?

I have a "generic" 20X Plan I bought on on Amazon or from Amscope (don't remember) on my Olympus CH2 that I've been very happy with. I rarely use anything higher than 40X. I have a Seiler Westlab II that has a 100X oil if I ever need it.

Re: Dynoptic question

Thanks to everyone for their responses. Hans, no illuminator. I think it had a mirror originally but it's missing that as well. I haven't decided yet if I want to try to make it operational. Depends on cost.

Dynoptic question

I was gifted an old B&L Dynoptic, the "pidgeon breast" style of body. It needs objectives and a condenser. What objectives do I need to look for similar to the originals? Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Welcome, victhree, and congratulations on you new scope. There are plenty of folks here with plenty of knowledge and experience who are willing to help. I can't say much about your 40X but the pointer is probably on an insert inside the eyepiece. Unscrewing the eyepiece carefully should give you acc...

That explanation makes more sense. It's been many years since I studied cell anatomy but I don't remember ER taking up that much volume in the cell. Could be wrong, though.
