Re: Microscope for moss/plants
That budget will get you a very nice brightfield scope with trinocular head. Actually connecting the camera to the head can sometimes be a bit of a DIY project, but it doesn’t need to be expensive, necessarily, and that can be a future project. You will need to decide wether to buy new or used. A ne...

ID this stereoscope?
I was wondering if somebody could tell me anything about this stereo microscope I stumbled across. The only name to be found is “Bioscope” on the eyepieces. There is a “Japan” sticker on the bottom (no “made in” ... maybe they are a just a fan of the country :D ) I thought it might be a Chinese clon...

Re: Adaptor for DSLR camera
Thank you for your reply! I understand that it's going to be awkward trying to use my DSLR without a trinocular head, but I really want to give it a go. Can you explain what you mean by a dedicated photo head? Presumably this is something that is an integrated part of a microscope? I meant a monocu...

Re: Fixed Köhler
Every design has compromises; cost, size, etc. If you taught a few biology classes every day, this compromise means you don't have to check every single microscope after every single class to see who fiddled with what. Then it might seem like a very good compromise. Not every setting requires that l...

Well, I am assuming that the 5000 is broken down to 500B, 500Y, etc ... if it is a 500-B from the 500-series, then that’s egg on my face!

I have one Tiffen and one Hoya that together offer excellent extinction. Those are good mid-priced brands. The cheap ones that I got bundled with lenses aren't nearly as good. The Amazon film I got falls somewhere in between.

Can you add a little information about the camera? I did a quick search for that make and model but couldn't find an exact match.

I suspect the “B” indicates it is the blue version.

Re: Roughly when did microscope manufacturers stop making their own glass?
The other resource that would have been critical is fuel for the furnaces. A century ago, that meant coal; something in abundance around the Great Lakes thanks to steel production. The area also had excellent railroad and shipping infrastructure. (Wasn’t Midland a terminus for one of the railroads?)...

You can get them for peanuts used, though. Just have to keep your eyes open. If you have a local camera shop they probably have a drawer full of old used ones. The small ones aren’t any good for modern lenses.DonSchaeffer wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 2:32 amThanks. I'll lok for sheets. Those filters are expensive and too big.

You buy polarizer sheets on Amazon or use camera filters. (Circular polarizers need to be oriented correctly to work. Linear can have either side up.)

I don’t speak Olympus, I guess. In Reichert-speak “Neo” means nearly or almost. The NeoPlan objectives are close to plan, but slot in under the Plan Achros.Scarodactyl wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 8:03 pmIn olympus lingo this would mean epi brightfield/darkfield kohler, wouldn't it? I’ve found a birdbath, left to its own devices other than topping off, develops quite a rich ecosystem. Large surface area catches lots of airborn “stuff” and visitation by a variety of critters that bring many hitchhikers.

Re: Adaptor for DSLR camera
The best way to connect a DSLR depends more on the microscope than the camera. Typically, it is preferred to avoid eye-piece adapters for DSLR's due the size and weight. (modern smartphones may actually be a better solution for adapting to the eyepiece ... the quality can be very good) A dedicated p...

Re: Some problems with my microscope
Well, the condenser is cheap, high NA and of metal construction, I'm a fan of rare looking equipment. It comes with its own stand, but if there is a problem I would rather use an Olympus. :D But does it work without further effort? "Just fits & works" has a value, too! Regarding the BH2 vs Infinity...

Re: AO/Reichert One-Fifty vs. Reichert-Jung Series 150 differences and head compatibility
I considered that, but I paid $24 + $40 shipping in an auction with other bidders so unless that was an unusually good deal (not sure since I had been mostly watching series 400 stuff) it seems like the stand/objectives alone are probably not valuable enough to be worth the trouble reselling on eBa...

Re: Please help a microscope noob with objectives
Putting Nikon glass on this project would be ... unnecessary. I am not sure what you mean by this. Nikon cf objectives are often available inexpensively, and even the lowest-tier 'e' economical line are pretty good. What I meant is, the scope design has very rudimentary lighting, so trying ...

Re: Please help a microscope noob with objectives
The main reason I shy away from the Chinese stuff is the unknowns. Are you really getting what they say you are? Is the quality good (enough)? Of course, the same could be said about buying used lenses. I really expected it to be easier to look up the specs of a given lens and know exactly what it ...

Re: Please help a microscope noob with objectives
Hi Aaron, I think the combination of computer and optics has lots of future. Especially in the form of an open source project where many people contribute to the further development. Most 160mm objectives are calculated with a residual chromatic error that is corrected by the eyepiece. So if your c...

Does the trinoc produce a well corrected image on the 410? (through one eypiece ... I know you said there was some issue there) If so, I think that answered the question. If the 150 were from an educational venue (likely) they may have been ordered that way simply to hit their budget. Students can l...

Re: AO/Reichert One-Fifty vs. Reichert-Jung Series 150 differences and head compatibility
I have not been watching series 10 stuff, but that makes sense. Of course, it is also the dangerous type of reasoning that already has me owning more microscopes than I logically need... The only reason I bought the 150 was to get the trinocular head for my 410s but it turned out to be in such nice...

Re: Please help a microscope noob with objectives
I am very curious what the point of this project is? The objectives are the expensive part of a microscope. A good quality older stand can be purchased for less (maybe far less) than the materials needed to print the microscope in your link. The illumination design alone will be extremely limiting ....

Re: AO/Reichert One-Fifty vs. Reichert-Jung Series 150 differences and head compatibility
You could also consider abandoning the older objectives, instead using some spare 45mm parfocal objectives and 410 head it came with. (depending, of course, on how much extra clearance there is under the stage) Given the price of nice series 10 stands right now, it seems hard to justify putting too ...

I don’t claim to be an expert, so I can’t help much. Apochronaut will be back shortly, and I am 99.9% certain he will know. It is not like my 214f, or others of that vintage as far as I can tell. So it is either newer (good for you) or older (less so). I think there is a broad range of compatibility...
