Re: Microscope parts for sale and identification

Hi John,
the eyepieces are Zeiss Jena, P is non-correcting.
The thing might be part of a monocular tube or a drawing atattchment.
These Tessar lenses - do they contain a diaphragm and do they have a mounting- or focussing thread?
I don't think they were from a Werra.

Re: Zeiss Photomicroscope - still sexy today?

Hi Doron, the lamp will probably be as little powerful in the Phomi as in your GFL. The Phomi has more mass as a heatsink though. I will have to see what I do. The "ABTO" control unit, named from the letters on the buttons, would easily house an additional LED-power supply too. The newer Phomi and U...

Re: Zeiss Photomicroscope - still sexy today?

As far as I know only a few Phomi I were made in all-black. Most had a black direction changer head and bino tube and a gray hammerite arm and base and control box. I usually prefer all black microscopes but with the Phomi I'm not sure about this. Right now I'm working on the radiator and furnitue o...

Re: Zeiss Photomicroscope - still sexy today?

Hi together, yesterday evening I lifted a Photomikroskop I onto my desk! I started to check the components and maintenance status and spent some time observing a stained plant section. It has seen little use over its 60 years and is in nice cosmetic condition. The Optovar with phase telescope is rea...

Hi Doron, your USB camera does really well and I'm sure you will have fun with it. For web resolution and documentary work the very best camera solutions are a massive overkill and much of their capability doesn't show. On your GFL the USB cam does astonishingly well in web resolution but I'm sure t...

Hi Peter, when I look at the second photo I would say that nothing is really in focus. Also there is no white in the image - is the background this light brown colour? The image also might be a bit on the contrasty but low resolution side - how was your condenser set? Here is a pollen image, taken 7...

Re: Revival of old Brasso paste

Just in case someone looks critical at his old brass microscope now: The value of old brass microscopes suffers if you polish it up to a nice antique-trader-shine. The old microscopes were painted with a stained shellac specific for this maker and they are far more valuable if parts of this old pain...

Re: Some Of My Homemade Permanent Slides

The right amount of sharpening depends on the final size of the image: If you sharpen it right in the original size it will be too little after reducing the size for the forum. This is also a matter of taste but I would increase the amout of unsharp masking and accept a little grain for a crisper lo...

Hi Rick, these images are quite nice in fact. The only things I don't like are the banding and a slight lack of apparent sharpness. Do you have an idea where the banding comes from? The light source or the camera? Does changing the brightness of the lamp influence the banding? Do you use unsharp mas...

Re: Older B&L microscope question

The condenser should support the objectives you use. In most cases the condenser is stopped down slightly below the aperture of the objective. If you have a 40:1 n.a. 0,65 objective you would use it with a condenser stopped down to ca. 0,5 to 0,65. When you remove an eyepiece and look into the tube ...

Hi Peter, nice to see that you've got the necessary pieces together. The images show some room for improvement but the important things work. Bob - tangential topic; do you happen to know where Leitz or Lomo would be on the correction scale? And did Zeiss change? We are told, (mostly be ebay sellers!) that Lomo = Zeiss. Re: Book on pond life sampling and pond aquariums in new layout - free

Hi Rick, the new layout comes especially handy when you want to print the book. The scanned original would be printed with the gray paper background making it toner-consuming to print and difficult to read. The original book is als quite small and re-formatted to A4 format the number of pages is red...

If you don't like the Windows 8.1-on start menu you can buy a program called "Startisback" and have your Windows 7 start menu back. I have used it for 2 years now and never had a problem with Windows 8.1. It costs just 3$.

Re: Older B&L microscope question

The nice aplanatic achromatic condenser is made for slides of 1,5 to 1,6 mm thickness. Todays slides have mostly 1,1mm. Apertures (here 1,4) over 1 can only be used effectively when the condenser is connected to the slide with a drop of immersion oil. This way you get homogenous oil immersion: Conde...

Re: Colour difference between L & R sides of binocular head (Reichert-Jung)

The colour difference might come from different amount or thickness of cemented surfaces but I think it is probably just the glass itself. Left and right have different light pathes and there is a lot of glass in a binocular tube. Glass can suffer from discolouration, but it is unlikely in this case...

Re: Colour difference between L & R sides of binocular head (Reichert-Jung)

Hi Tim, to me the difference between left and right seems to be about the same with both heads. So it might be typical for this model. Of cause a broken cement layer or the re-cementing could have an influence. I have had bino tubes with colour difference, but remember it to be less visible. Apart f...

To measure inside threads it is also a way to use a piece of wood or cardboard and transfer some paint or dirt marks of the thread onto it. Paper is not ideal as it deforms when pressed onto the thread. Bills cast method is more precise but usually I'm too much in a hurry!

And, how do you know that I don't know much about designing ? The plastic and metal parts of a microscope is very simple to design. Re: Is a eyepiece and an objective enough for a microscope ?

It is possible to design a microscope from a 3D-printed body and some metal parts. But using 3D-printing actually makes it very diffcult to come to an acceptable design. And this is where the problem lies: The question you ask show that you don't know much about designing things and nothing about mi...

Hi together, perhaps this bit of information can help: The first generation of the Tamron 90mm 1:2,5 Macro lenses had a blue spot problem when used on a DSLR.
