Re: A Couple of Fittings for the 4 Series Microscope

Metric - imperial conversion: My metric lathe has a 63 tooth gear. 63 is close to the half of 127 which is half of 254. A 63 or 127 tooth gear might help in your case too, Rick. There are computer programs to calculate gear settings based on what gears you have available. The sometimes come to many ...

Re: Book on pond life sampling and pond aquariums in new layout - free

Hi Michael, I'm not sure what kind of material his India rubber was actually. It might have been an early hard rubber or soft rubber like bicyle inner tubes. The traditional red soft rubber had a tendency to stick to certain things but I don't know the mechanism behind this. I'm quite happy to have ...

Re: Book on pond life sampling and pond aquariums in new layout - free

The book was written in the late 1800s and very few of the man made substances of today were known then. Henry Scherren must have been comparatively well off to be able to afford equipment, travel expenses and instruments and have free time available for pond collecting. Today it is not uncommon to ...

Book on pond life sampling and pond aquariums in new layout - free

Hi together, when preparing the December meeting of our microscopy group about artificial ecosystems I came upon a nice old book that is still helpful to read today: Henry Scherren: Ponds and Rock Pools. Our group celleague Georg Rosenfeldt has put this book in a new layout to make it better to read...

Re: Zeiss Universal - I think - Lot's of Questions

Hi William, you bought a very nice microscope there! It is equipped with a lot of very special components for fluorescence, DIC and phase but he question is whether one or more of these setups are complete as it stands there. You might only have a very good start to a fully equipped research microsc...

Hi John,
interesting sections with the lateral root and the splitting root!
Have you tried Etzold FSA or FCA or Wacker W3A triple stains? They are quite popular here in Germany.

Re: Confused even more. Older Leitz 100X and 1/12" objectives.

Hi Phil, I don't have an explanation for the unexpected behaviour of the Leitz objective. The only thing I can imagine is that the front element might have been exchanged for an other one. The front lens of a fixed oil immersion objective is easily damaged and someone might have screwed something el...

Re: Ultraphot II Carl Zeiss asking price?

This microscope was obscenely expensive when new but it is equaly unattractive for the user and most collectors today. So I think it will be the best to describe it precisely with all it's accessories (inscriptions and part numbers and condition) and list it on ebay. Since there is only one person e...

Re: Are cheap 100x objectives any good?

It is fairly easy to get a good microscope image on a full- HD screen. So it would be an idea to let the kids gain some practical experience with their microscopes with standard equipment and then demonstrate the few details where a 100:1 oil is needed on the teachers demonstration microscope. If th...

5-seat nosepieces from the Zeiss Jena LG, NG and NF (black) fit perfectly. Nosepieces from the Zeiss Jena Amplival-series ( beige) are just slightly higher, no practical problem. On german ebay these nosepieces cost about 25€ each.

Re: Are cheap 100x objectives any good?

Of the simple achromats the 100:1 is by far the most difficult to make. The Chinese can get this right but they have a tendency to get far easier things wrong so I wouldn't like to play quality control for them. Do the condensers have an adequate n.a.? In use I see these challenges to be mastered: T...

Hi Chris, it is no wonder that nobody has answered your question on PM - it is difficult to make out what you really want. I will try it. "My" secondary school doesn't have any objectives over 40x/0.65, which isn't enough to look at chromosomes etc. Why, the chromosomes in onion tips can be seen wit...

To get started you can just cut a CD cover in stripes and use transparent adhesive film (In Germany: TESA-Film) as the cover slip. For low power objectives this is very acceptable.

Re: Older B&L microscope question

This is always the problem with used microscopes - some are uncomplete, some have defects, some just need maintenance and some are not right for the buyer's needs. On the other hand side you get a quality instrument for a modest sum and of stable value. A compound microscope is mostly used between 1...

Re: Older B&L microscope question

Don't worry, microscope technique is a wide and difficult field, but you don't have to be an expert to start working with the microscope. Your lamp base probably had a lamp socket when new, that places the filament in the right spot. They tend to get lost when power supply and microscope are separat...

Re: Older B&L microscope question

RMS eyepiece tubes have 23mm diameter so the maximum field size is about 20mm. This can be fully used with a 10x eyepiece, so a 6x 20mm eyepiece shows the same 20mm field with less magnification so the image just looks smaller and covers a smaller angle of view. If I were to equip this nice microsco...

Especially when cutting into a full diameter carrot block the single phased blade is pulled down hard onto the table and into the openin...

Hi Doron, I have seen Olivers video, but the method didn't quite work: The carrot block canted upwards and the object wasn' t kept stable. So the punch would have to make a bigger, tighter fitting carrot block. One Problem with carrot is that the lead sap that rots in the microtome, the other is tha...
