I enjoy snorkelling around and being able to identify the organisms around me whether that be with the eye or microscopic.
Welcome.

Must say I am still trying to get my head around the idea that anyone would snorkel in Orkney (Full disclosure - I used to live in the Caribbean) :)

Re: Just got my diatom test slide!

. Those are nice images! It certainly is a challenge (and fun) trying to tease out the smallest of details in some diatoms. I think DIC isn't necessarily the best technique to bring out these ultra small details - phase contrast might be a better fit. While I believe UV gets the most out of diatoms,...

Neat idea + interesting catches!

You could pick a relevant company name, register the domain, and find a low cost provider to host it and your new email system. Some reliable providers, such as "Go Daddy" in the US, offer fairly cheap registrations and hosting services. Sadlly, Zeiss is not alone in actively discouraging "time was...

Any advice in particular about prepping the sample/configuring the scope? One thing I'm still not 100% clear on is how to tell when the DF condenser is properly aligned - do I just defocus it a bunch? Make a very thin mount. Avoid debris or dust. Oil the condenser and make sure it is FULLY immersed...

That looks as if it might work well. What do you place in the cavities (between the microscope and the sides of the box) ... Styrofoam chips?

I find if you place them in plastic bags i.e. make pillows, they stay where you put them and offer more protection than loose ones do.

Based on my research thus far I have the impression Motic microscopes are the only affordable microscopes (purchased new) for hobbyists/photomicrographers.
Unless one has a budget of thousands, in microscopy, new is not better.
