Re: Fine Focal Adjustment Device.
The precision of fine focus mechanisms on microscopes varies quite a bit; anywhere from 1 micron to 2.5 microns as marked in graduations on the focus control or knob. Small knobs will provide less control, with wider graduations between the marks. If your microscope has a smaller knob and less preci...

Re: I need help with a microscope too
Cyanobacteria, although narrow, are quite easily seen in a light microscope. Average microscopes, will however show little detail. PeteM's advice to source out phase contrast or polarization is valuable but also upping the imaging capability via the optics of the microscope itself, will also be nece...

Re: Question
Interesting that Euromex are made in the Netherlands. There must be a Dutch law that if a certain amount of the assembly is done locally, then it qualifies as domestic made. We have coffee that is product of Canada, here. The Euromex line looks pretty decent in the context of Chinese microscopes. So...

Re: Question
I remember your question from a while ago. Did you try the method I suggested before? It always works, due to the leverage the pliers or vice grips supply. If you cannot source a narrow leather strap to wrap around the objective base, cut one from an old pair of shoes, work boots or other item. Stra...

I love the chairs in the picture of Zen Chen. 1950's wooden office chairs and he is using the world's highest resolution electron microscope while sitting in one. Cornell is a great place. Nice to be able to get just the top and it fulfills your needed spec. Searching out that perfect engine of the optical train that brings your most demanding objectives to their intended station , sometimes takes a little time. These higher end condensers are so few for certain scopes and for sure, q...

I bought a cheap 10.00 multi bit set about 10 years ago and fashioned the slot bits with sandpaper blocks and a whet stone . They are excellent quality, don't burr or bend or deform in any way. I broke one but it reworked with some careful grinding. Here is a similar set that is claiming 56 HRC. Har...

Re: Field of view coverage, plan/non plan comparison
The term plan is entirely relative, though. There is no standardization and a plan objective used with a recommended eyepiece can become semi-plan with a similarly corrected eyepiece of a wider field. Plan f's.o.v. have increased over time too. It used to be common to see plan objective/eyepiece com...

I used to keep a bottle of a cheap carbonated drink around to clean rust off of drum parts. I think the last one was orange crush. It works like a miracle with an overnight soak. Usually coke is prescribed. It's the phosphoric acid. It will do the job. However with microscope parts, I am a little lo...

Re: Problem with a microscope
Wrap a narrow leather strap around objective base; the knurled part. Then put the large part of the jaw of a pair of 6"(150mm) or 8" (200 mm) slip joint pliers gripping the leather strap. It would be best to set the pliers to the large setting in the slip joint. You can easily just loosen the object...

Re: Problem with Diaplan
The condenser shouldn't affect whether you can focus an image or not, just the quality or lack of light. I presume you are getting light to the stage.
I would first check Hobbyist46's thought and if not look for a intermediate problem between the nosepiece and head.

Re: Looking for parts for Microstar IV
The simple new holder is made from a piece of scrap 6061 aluminum. The only slightly 'critical' dimensions are 1 through 5: 1. The large hole; it is 0.253" (6.48mm), for a slip-fit over the existing pivot bushing (which has an O.D. of 0.250"). 2. The small hole; it is 1/8" (3.16mm), for a press-fit...

Re: Leitz 63x 170 mm dry objective
I have asked for more information about the 63x/0.90 dry 170 mm objective. Answer is "that’s a Objective for a reflected light microscope, a dry Objective…without a 0,17mm coverglass". I do not know exactly the consequences of that, but I suppose it is not useable on my Leitz Orthoplan. It would wo...

Re: What does x:1 mean on an objective?
It's the same thing. It was a convention used by some companies but largely died out after the war. Since you have an Orthoplan and have been looking at Leitz objectives, you will often see that on older Leitz objectives in the 37mm parfocal measurement. I don't think it was used much when they swit...

Re: Looking for parts for Microstar IV
The one small pale blue filter I have is not larger than the original housing, so it wouldn't be a problem in terms of it being oversize but you are correct; at some point a larger size would be too much. However, if say 32mm filters turned out to be the best choice but slightly too big, the new mou...

Re: Looking for parts for Microstar IV
Apologies for assuming. Any I had with broken filter housings had intact sky filters and busted neutral density filter housings. Perhaps they were used with the sky filter out, more than in. I can see that the heat of the lamp, might over time damage the plastic housing. I have one small light blue ...

I use an a5000 on several microscopes, so the same as your 6000. Each microscope has the basic tube which the microscope came with. I DIY'd a T mount to fit each, and made sure it could be moved relative to the photo relay lens, which resides in the tube. From there, I use various distance pieces; m...

I have much less experience with Olympus, than some other brands. What is the S for? With some brands SPlan means semi-plan, or around 80-90% of the field , plan. Vickers , uses the term Microplan for the same thing.

I can see the section of the slide that you have chosen to highlight with the 40x pic and it seems much more evenly focused when imaged with the 4x. This is hard to determine exactly, because the 4x has so much deeper depth of field but it does seem that the 40x has a possible problem. This is a use...

If they are easily removable, lamp sockets are often missing on used microscopes. The scenario goes something like this, even though just about every primer or manual related to microscope use prints a version of : always keep a spare bulb on hand. The lamp quits and the microscope gets removed from...

Walnuts( Juglans Regia) are quite variable in hardiness too. I have about a 30 year old tree, which struggles, yet there is a grove, about 15 km. from me that does much better. It appears to be a case of varietal adaption, since the micro climates of both sites are similar. My tree is a seedling, wh...
