Re: Fur beetle larvae

Thanks, Gekko and Rodney!

Unfortunately, a fur beetle larvae is nothing you want to find inside the house since it eats your furs and clothes. The adult animal is a brown beetle with dark spots on its back. They are harmless, but the larvae is a pain.

Olympus UplanFl. I use 4x, 10x, 20x, 40x and 100x. Actually they are Phase, but I did not use the phase condensor for these images.

Re: Diatom?

I wish I remembered the magnification, but it is for sure an Olympus UplanFl. I think 20x, but since I also have a magnification changer so sometimes I have 2x on the changer and a lower power objective. I need to start write down my config for all images I take.

Fur beetle larvae

Here are some pictures of a fur beetle larvae. Some of the stacked images are a little blurry because I could not get him to lay still. I tried ether, but it did not help. I hope you like them. Full body. Brightfield. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ewqkfr89m51w0mb/Fur_beetle_full2.jpg?dl=1 Full body, dar...

Great images. Do you have a reference or link to eBay/seller for this camera? I could find it when I searched. I need one for my auto collimator.

Crisp and clear! I have only started to learn stacking. Seems like it takes a lot of pre-processing to get good/excellent results.

Second "discovery" in xmas tree water

Making a second attempt. Hopefully a little more in-focus images this time... :)

I know the last critter is a Rotifer, but I cannot identify the rotating ball and the small-nosed fast moving guys.

Re: Rotifier feeding

Hi Gekko, you are absolutely right. This was sloppy work as I did not make all adjustments properly. I wear glasses normally, but did not use them so most likely the camera was slightly out of focus. And yes, it was cropped by the camera as I see more in the eyepieces. Also, the Rotifer was way thic...

Hi,

You may find this link useful:

I believe the CH2 have the same tube length as the BH2, so you may get those adapters to work.

Yes, and that corredponds pretty well to what you have to pay for a new rotary microtome today.

Re: American Optical Microtome Model 810

The 810, 815, and 820 where available at the same time. The 810 being the simplest of the three, but also relatively light and compact compared to its bigger cousins. The knife you need is the American Optical 940. It is 110 mm wide. You can of course fit a longer knife as well, but then it will sti...

Stunning results! Regarding the 0.02 micrometer cuts. That would equal to 20 nano meters. That is smaller than 1/10th of the wavelength of light. What type of knife edge would you need for these cuts? The edge of the blade would have to be very thin the the edge would not be optically resolvable in ...

Wing part of a house fly

In "Darkfield". Not really, but I realized if I put the rotating DIC condenser between two positions the frame of the DIC prism blocks some of the light cone and a dark field like condition occurs. Not designed that way, but still an interesting side effect. https://www.dropbox.com/s/2rj7njsh20ilcve...

Re: New, but still old stuff

Hi HKV, Use them, they may be beautiful but they were designed and built as working tools (that's my opinion anyway). My microtome has two cams which are operated using ball and socket joints the sockets are plastic, the plastic material perished leaving the microtome inoperable until I made new pl...

I am a sucker for old stuff in like-new conditions. Sharing with you a few of my recent purchases. Bu accident I found a pristine absolutely mint condition Reichert microscope. Re: Antenna section of a Locust

Thanks all for the kind comments. Yes, DIC is great. I have it installed all the time more or less. No need to stain anymore since DIC seems to get contrast even for bacterias. Great technique. However, fluorescence illumination still needs proper staining. DIC will not solve that.
