Renovation rubble, part 2

Part 1 of Renovation Rubble the thin section thickness was approx. 110 microns. The sample has been polished a bit more and now is approx. 90 microns. My thickness calculations in the past have ignored the layer of epoxy bonding the specimen to the glass slide. That omission resulted in a couple of ...

Crater Eddie: What wattage of halogen lamp did you replace with your 10w LED light source? I tried a 10W LED in my Labomed LB-592 with dismal results. The Labomed has a 100w (2000 lumen) halogen lamp. By my calculations, I would need a 25w LED replacement. I have a Gossen light meter with a microsco...

When you are using a low power objective, one less than 10x, the condenser lens should be OUT. when using a higher power obj, 10x and a...

The improper use of a condenser with swing out lens. An observation.

The linked presentation shows the relationship between the condenser, resolution and contrast when the condenser is improperly used. The microscope is a Labomed polarizing unit with swing out condenser and field diaphragm. The condenser with the swing out lens in place has a N.A. of 1.15 and a N.A. ...

My method to working with soft and porous material is to soak the object in a diluted solution of Elmer's Glass glue. When the object is removed from the solution and dried it is quite workable.

And you thought sulphur was bright yellow.

I cut a small chunk of really bright yellow sulphur in half and made them into thin section slides. The first grinding stage was with a 150 grit paper that produced a lot of sulphur dust. The dust was sprinkled into a puddle of glass glue and spread along a slide. Thus there are three samples: a) A ...

Re: Half way up the learning curve.

I started out grinding on a glass lapping plate with silicon carbide grits. That method worked if I could cut a starting slice thin enough. Which I had great difficulty doing without a proper saw. I have "graduated" to using a power saw, flat lap machine and finishing off with the glass lap and 1 mi...

Several Canon DSLR's have the first curtain shutter built in as a feature with Live View. I have been stating for quite some time, that my Canon 5D MkII and 1000D/XS do not show any mirror / shutter effect. The 5D is mounted on a 17kg microscope and the 1000d/XS is on a much lighter 5kg microscope. ...

A microscope without an eyepiece is a lens. Cameras have lens attached to them. My cameras have microscopes as lenses. My cameras are adjusted to see rectangular images. I really think I am the exception. The eyepieces for my Labomed microscope have never been installed. The caps are still on the tubes.
