Re: Pediastrum

Excellent images! What excitation wavelength did you use? I assume that you used epi-illumnation for the excitation? If so, how would DIC work then? Please forgive me if my questions are too dumb... Also if you've already answered them elsewhere, in which case please only give the link (I have not b...

Re: Re-rated bulb life formula

For what it's worth: Most inexpensive voltmeters measuring AC voltage assume that the waveform is sinusoidal (at least that was the situation that obtained some years ago-- I'm not sure if the new advances in chips have changed the situation: hopefully someone would bring us up to date). If the wave...

Re: My Kit

Gekko, no worries about the new line of discussion. This thread has covered a lot of ground, all of it, including green filters, is interesting. Go for it! Rod If I may for what it's worth, I would like to add that I just got the Lee #124 filter recommended by zzffnn, and I compared it with the Nik...

Re: More From Leisure Lake

Whoa these are really cool. I want to learn how to take pictures like this. Thanks ISSS. It is pretty straightforward darkfield microscopy and imaging. The Diatom part I have documented with lots of help from folks here in the "Doing Diatoms" thread. You can certainly get there! Happy to help if I ...

Very nice picture, Charlie, although I wish it were larger. Very well exposed, too, something I find difficult to do in darkfield.

Re: I enjoy growing duck weed...indoors and outdoors.

Apologies, Charlie, for the delay in replying. Thank you for confirming that my picture is that of duckweed root, and, especially for pointing out Leeuwenhoek's image for comparison. It is amazing what Leeuwenhoek could do with a simple lens. This confirms by belief that in large measure it is not t...

You could also try various concentrations of food dye of various colors in a small Petri dish below the condenser. Or is that not what you are asking about?

Welcome, Xito. I strongly agree with JimT about getting a binocular microscope. In fact, if you plan to take photographs through the microscope, I would highly recommend a trinocular.

Re: Questions about the use of an eyepiece as a photo projection lens

Thank you 75RR for your reply. Yes I know they work well but I was wondering (1) how they compare to generic projection lenses and whether they may be as good as the manufacturer's own compensating projection lenses and (2) whether their performance (image quality) deteriorates in theory as they are...

Questions about the use of an eyepiece as a photo projection lens

This question arose in my mind when reading the discussion about using a projection lens with Rod's AO microscope ( http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=776 ). I had always assumed, without real knowledge, that in the case of microscopes that require compensating eyepie...

Re: What Is This?? Paging Mr. Apochronaut!

How is it obvious that it's a low power eyepiece? Kurt, I thought it was an eyepiece because it is shaped like a long eyepiece and the diameter of the part that inserts into the microscope looks the same as the other two eyepieces in the picture. It looked to me like a very low power eyepiece becau...

Re: I enjoy growing duck weed...indoors and outdoors.

Thank you, charlie, for, as usual, an interesting, informative, and helpful post with nice illustrative pictures. Some time ago I took some pictures of what I thought was duckweed root under the microscope, and I've always wondered if my identification was correct. Here is a link: http://imgur.com/9...

Re: What Is This?? Paging Mr. Apochronaut!

Please excuse what is probably a dumb question: since it looks like a very low power eyepiece, could it be a projection eyepiece used with a prism or mirror to project an image on a wall?

But my question is this: you can make the comparison with the ...

Re: Stuck spring objective -- any way to free up?

The lighter fluid obviously evaporates very quickly, so your point of wicking away the gunk+lighter fluid after repeatedly applying it is what I usually do with my partially sticking spring-loaded objective. If the optics are enclosed and sealed in an inner barrel, this should be safe to do, I think...

Thanks Gekko. If by the lens, you mean the projection lens, I can't comment yet, as the way it is configured, I am not sure I can remove the lens from the adapter. I will have to investigate that. My fault, Rod: I thought that the adapter did not include a lens . Sorry about that. I certainly did n...

Re: Amoeba with algae

I think it depends what you want to do with the images. If you want to make large prints I can see that. For posting on the forum, you will be using less than 1 megapixel anyway so HD would, I think, be fine, unless you need to make heavy crops. Or is there something I am missing?
