Colors: I think charlie g got it almost right-- the regular pattern of the diatoms is in effect a 2-d diffraction grating, and the colors I think are due to the light being diffracted (rather than refracted) by the "grating".

Many thanks for taking the time to explain in detail. Not much leeway between excitation and emission ranges. Nice sharp cut-off filters.

Very beautiful images. I think the large round thing that has gobbled up the little algae is an amoeba of genus Thecamoeba but,as always, I may be wrong.

For what it's worth, I usually run my 12-V 50-W tungsten halogen lamp at 75% to 90% of rated voltage (according to the microscope's voltmeter).
