LED white balance and blue/green artifacts
Setup is Wild M7A with Canon M200 mirrorless attached via direct projection using Wild 404891 phototube, light source is AmScope 30W LED dual gooseneck fiberoptic illuminator. I set the white balance to manual on the camera, using a blank white image as the source. The white balance is good, but the...

Re: Wild M7A questions: interpupillary distance, how to clean phototube lens, change occulars
Re. cleaning the 404891 - I got some CleanTip swabs from Texwipe - nr. TX761 - and some drug-store variety 70% Isopropanol and just slowly went over the glass surface that is visible in the bottom of the tube, looking from above. I did not remove the adapter, and I didn't take anything apart. I alte...

Re: Wild phototubes and their use with/ without eyepiece
I setup my M7A with the Diagnostic Instruments D10NLC to connect to a Canon mirrorless (M200) camera using a Fotodiox C-Mount to EOS-M adapter. I found I needed to add a spacer underneath the D10NLC to get parfocal image between eyepieces (16x/16) and the camera. My spacer is 0.330" tall, made out o...

Wild M7A questions: interpupillary distance, how to clean phototube lens, change occulars
First, thanks for any help. I have a new-to-me Wild M7A that appears to be in very good condition. I immediately have 3 questions. First, can the interpupillary distance be adjusted? Second, it has a 404891photoube with a dirty lens down in the bottom - how do I clean it? Third, it has Carl Zeiss Pl...

Re: DSLR, or mirrorless? (And a question about mirrorless adapters)
I can clarify the answer to the question about adapter thickness by reference to https://briansmith.com/flange-focal-distance-guide/ which is just one good source of information that I came across. Different cameras/lenses have different flange focal distances. This is the distance from the lens mou...

Direct projection Wild M7A using phototube 404891 color correction?
Does a direct projection method of attaching a camera to a Wild phototube have any inherent problem since it has no color correction via an eyepiece? I have a Wild M7A with phototube 404891that I intend to attach a Canon mirrorless camera to, using a Diagnostic Instruments D10NLC and a C-mount to Ca...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
Final comment, I hope - I've now tried macrophotography alternatives to the SMZ-143 and they offer a promise of better images than the Motic. A comparison of the Motic using direct image with a Canon M200 mirrorless and a Canon 7D with an Olympus 28mm lens reverse-mounted is here . The Motic has its...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
I received the parts I needed to complete the afocal setup I wanted to try. The bottom line is that the direct image approach with focus stacking gives the best results on the Motic SMZ-143 of the now 5 different approaches I have tried. My afocal setup works well on my Leitz monocular scope, but no...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
Hans - I think you are right about dept of focus - I can move the eyepiece out quite a lot out on the Leitz scope without vastly changing the focus. I will proceed to cut the eyepiece tube for the Motic assuming the Periplan will sit 8mm lower than the old Leitz eyepieces. So far my testing with the...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
The afocal setup I want to try includes a Leitz eyepiece that has 28mm threads for the eyecup, which can be attached directly to the filter threads of a camera lens by a filter step-down adapter ring. The eyepiece will project directly into the camera lens where the human eye would normally be. I am...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
Hans - Thank you for the detailed reply. I am in the process of making up what should be a decent afocal camera setup to test the image quality achieved through the eyepieces. My Canon EOS M200 kit lens (15mm-45mm zoom) is not well suited to afocal use; I've ordered an Olympus OM 50mm 1.8 pancake le...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
I'm still trying to improve image quality. Is it possible that using good optics will improve a directly-projected image? I assume it is, but I don't understand why. Am I correct that the location where I have the sensor plane of my camera with the direct-image approach is the 'intermediate image pl...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
My 'plumbing parts' adapter works better than any of the Motic adapters for SMZ-143, but still not what I would like. However, it will do for my purposes until I am ready to spend more money on the whole setup. Here is how I made it: I used a tripod to hold the camera body without lens over the empt...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
I'm working on an adapter made out of two pieces of PVC pipe - male and female connectors to give adjustment, glued to a C-mount lens adapter for Canon EF-M mounts. Will post pictures when ready. If it works, total cost will be about $23. Waiting for the lens adapter (Fotodiox C-EOSM). I have read (...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
Update - I've been reading Charles Krebs very useful articles here and now understand better where the image is in the trinocular tube, and what can be done with it. I understand the image is for practical purposes around 20mm in diameter, formed in the tube below the top, and is a real image which ...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
If you move the zoom/focus region over to the edge where it was more obvious, can you see that directional smearing/doubling in live view? How does sharpness compare to images taken with smartphone camera through an eyepiece? Here is a picture of my M200 taking a picture (trinoc port) in live view ...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
I appreciate your thoughts, and hope to clarify what I have tried. Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
Update after trying Canon EOS M200 with Motic SMZ-143 and 2x Motic Projection adapter. I am happy with my purchase of the M200. It is small and light, the screen tilts, the controls are well thought out, it can communicate with a PC wirelessly and I find the screen satisfactory for image composition...

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
The EOS Utility program manual is available on the Canon support webpage. It says the M200 is fully supported, but the M10, as you indicate, is not supported for live view. I have no experience yet as I just ordered the camera, but will report back later.

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
OK, I'll start to answer my own post. Motic sells a '2X Projection Lens' for the SMZ-143 for attachment of SLR's via the microscope's trinocular port. The mirrorless camera I ended up purchasing (Canon EOS M200) has an APS-C sensor which measures 23.5x15.6mm, smaller than a full frame SLR, but much ...

Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
Has anyone had any experience using a mirrorless camera (like Sony A5100) with the Motic 2X SLR Projection Lens (part #1101000900551) in the trinocular port of a Motic SMZ143? I tried the Motic C-mount adapters with a couple lower-end cameras (Motic 1 and Toupcam 5MP) and was not satisfied with the ...

Motik Images Plus 3.0 file format question
I am new to MIP and see image files being saved with an '.mwi' suffix. I have set my default image type to .jpg, but when I capture an image, I get the .jpg and a file with same name, but .jpg.mwi suffix. What is that? I can delete the .mwi file and still view the .jpg. Example attached. Thank you.
