Re: How do you deal with the glare in camera

The knockoff AO photo tubes beiing sold on ebay have the same problem but it doesn't look exactly like that. I thought about it in your case but decided not to bring it up in order not to lead you away from the real cause, which did seem to be a focal point problem. Glad you found that solution. In ...

Re: Evolution of the Olympus microscope line

If I recall Olympus , in their official history, brings up the M & Katera connection and the first mass produced microscope in Japan but in actual fact Olympus was a thermometer company by the name of Kogaku Kikai Sensakusho when that model was made by M & Katera, the direct corporate ancestor of Ch...

Re: How to Diy objective parcentering.

Another great contribution thanks. Striving for perfection in production is the biggest waste of time and money resulting in bankruptcy or buy out. There is an agreed standard, sometimes that is exceeded by chance. Below that is usually left for the phase B tester to dispute and resolve. The intend...

Re: How to Diy objective parcentering.

apochronaut, Thanks for this very informative post. If I understand your last paragraph, you deduced from position of the image where the shoulder was contacting the nosepiece, and filed that point of the shoulder down about 0.0035 inches (enough to move the contact point about 45 degrees) to move ...

Re: LOMO 40x 0.75 water immersion objective

The 40X .75 objective is a pretty good match for a Spencer stand and since it is good practice to lift the objective out of the water vertically and bring the next objective in vertically, almost always accompanied by a water refresh, the 2mm parfocal distance isn't really a problem. Your best bet f...

Re: Using modern olympus objectives on old olympus

Mainly the skewed focus. This can be caused by a slight de-lamination. I have seen an Olympus 160mm 45mm parfocal planapo objective where a bottom element in a cell just ever so slightly dropped out of it's mount. It was air spaced with a tiny gap above the upper lens in the lower cell, and dropped ...

Re: Using modern olympus objectives on old olympus

Scarodactyl is correct. The objective has most likely been disassembled without observing and marking the original alignment of the lens cells and then reassembled carelessly. The seller is incorrect. The objective can likely be repaired but with considerable effort and time. I would try to return i...

How to Diy objective parcentering.

The parcentering of a microscope's objectives in the nosepiece is one of the least noted quality parameters or specifications one is likely to encounter in a microscope's description. However, in older microscopes and lower cost new microscopes it easily is one of the most important overlooked perfo...

I should have added to the above but I guess I thought it would be obvious, that if you are comparing two objectives from different systems, a 40X .65 planachromat from a 160mm system for instance to a 40X .65 planachromat from an infinity system and therefore have to use two sets of supporting opti...

Re: Is it ok to use metalloscopy objective in biology microscope?

Such an objective would likely behave differently under transmitted light conditions, where the light is passing through the coverslip only once. However, it is planapo and any deviation from it's required operating environment can only tip it's performance off specification. The most obvious deviat...

For diascopic objectives always use a prepared slide as a standard : either one you know very well or one that has known parameters, such as a diatom test slide. When possible, compare the objective to a similar one you are familiar with, even if that means changing eyepieces or setting up two stands...

Big round of applause, Steve. Well done. Now, if that nasty oil will just stay put. Keep acetone away from it. Epoxy loses it's will to live around acetone but happily your objective hasn't and pulled through.
be even better with 1.52 oil.

Since the distance used on the Biolar is 52mm, then if you can't lower the interference head on your microscope to that height above the nosepiece facing surface, it is possible that is the problem with the system. I don't know how to lower it on your microscope. It may be easiest to look for anothe...

Going back to Pete M's comment that he had to lower a PZO interference head when adapting it to an Olympus BHT, check the nosepiece face/objective shoulder to the interference head dovetail surface. I get 52mm on a Biolar. You wouldn't want to be taller than that, I would think.

I can't think of too many instances where a company has changed production from one company to another and not adopted an entirely different design. The Galen microscope, Bausch & Lomb's 2nd tier model had one incarnation that was very similar to a Micromaster model. The Galen started out as a sligh...
