Re: Counting chambers

Sorry, slightly different topic he was asking about. No, it doesnt change working distance. Slightly changes magnification but its not noticable, other than that it doesnt change anything. (Parfocal extenders)

The eyes were clear on one frame of the video, it does have some on its rostrum, like a rotaria would.

Re: Gastrotricha, rotifer and water flea?

If it does have trochi then maybe https://www.plingfactory.de/Science/Atlas/KennkartenTiere/Rotifers/01RotEng/source/Macrotrachela%20punctata.html Or http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/wimsmall/extra/rotif9.html (Again, just the genus, not the species) depending on whether it lays eggs or has live ...

You arent spamming, thats what these boards are for. :) So far im thinking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSXlo8fuxzg Not neccessarily that species, just that genus. Im getting crosseyed and cant decide if I see stuff or not, so I will come back to it later if noone else has. I didnt see trochi, th...

Re: More from the pond - Rotifer?

Video is working fine. :) In order for me to identify her I need to see her beak (mastax and trophi) which is halfway down her throat, looks like a diatom, and is often moving. I find it tough to get a good look and I always need to use the 40x or 60x objective and a coverslip to accomplish it. I am...

Re: Paramecium death

Distilled water is worse. It causes excessive osmotic pressure which is fatal. Thats why we use blood plasma instead of distilled water for transfusions and saline solutions for an IV. If you let the water sit uncovered for 24 hours the chlorine will evaporate off. (Boiling the water does the same t...

Re: Totally new - introduction

I am experimenting with xanthum gum, which is a polysaccharide produced by bacteria, aka a biofilm. I mix it to 1% with chlorine free water to make an odd light gray syrup. Then I mix 1 drop of that with one drop pond water. It slows them right down, but it takes a bit to thicken. It has the propert...

Re: Help identifying another old AO Spencer scope

I was sure that UC 1350 was a red herring, it didnt belong there. I was relieved to see I was right. I was somewhat sure it was a series 2, I had found the part number for the base, but I wasnt able to confirm the year of it and I didnt know if it was 160mm or infinity because of that. Apo knows, th...

Re: Swift SW380T or OMAX model (B005TJ5CEG)

If one gets a 185 and should have gotten a 195 then a $10 (ebay) 10mm parfocal extender can be used and works perfectly. There are also JIS (japanese standard) objectives made for a 170mm tube instead of a 160mm tube. If one gets one of these by mistake it will work but magnifies a bit more. Keep us...

I think I know something about it, but I could not confirm it. I will leave it to apo, he probably has two of these on his shelf.

Re: Swift SW380T or OMAX model (B005TJ5CEG)

I like looking at live microbes, so for a regular wetmount I wouldnt normally use a toplight. For a no coverslip wet sample I may use the toplight to look at the top of bits of dirt or organic material for interesting fungal hyphae or maybe to look at a thick microarthropod. I have made slides with ...

Re: Swift SW380T or OMAX model (B005TJ5CEG)

The swift appears to have slots in the housing between the light source and its lens. My premiere has this and it allows me to slide in a homemade darkfield stop that gives me darkfield with my 40x and 60x objectives. (Not possible with filter rack homemade darkfield stops). The omax has a solid hou...

I am quite inexperienced, there are many people on here that can answer this better than me, but I will give it a shot. I faced the same same decision you are facing and I purchased a 60x low N.A. objective and also a 60x high N.A. objective. The image on the two is kind of similar, and the working ...

Re: Quick question...

Focusing at the eyepiece end instead of the objective end will cause a change in the scale of x and y, as z changes. I think this happens even when focusing normally, but if not then software could easily deal with this issue and only slightly degrade the images. It sounds like its not that hard and...
