Microscopic life in a sea water aquarium
I have always wanted to but never had the opportunity to study marine microscopic life. I had the idea of simply walking into a sea water aquarium store and asking for a small sample. The owner of the store was very intrigued by my request and picked material from 3 different aquariums. Here I prese...

Re: Question about a Zeiss part
I use a 10x/18 Kpl-W eyepiece and a 40 mm pancake lens which nicely fills the APS-C sensor of my camera. A 10x/20 is better but I noticed that these produce a purple hotspot that can be annoying.

Re: Question about a Zeiss part
Hi Tim, What you have is a 63 mm objective for the conversion of a virtual into a real image. A real image is one that can be directly projected onto a sensor, film or a projection screen. You need clamping ring 47 60 05 and phototube 47 30 24: https://www.mikroskopie-forum.de/pictures004/156041_290...

Hi Jochen,
Thank you for the detailed demonstration of the K5 slide. Its always exciting to see how reality reflects theory which you nicely show here.

Microscopy of algae reproduction
I really enjoyed these videos from Jeremy Pickett-Heaps, a renowned Australian plant cell biologist, and thought I'd share them here. Really unique footage of events pertaining to the reproduction of algae captured using classical video microscopy techniques. n7RggKhWD8g xXaTyYpGkTU O9v-xj2fjQI WDWb...

Re: My Zeiss Microscopes (Comparison photo adaption Zeiss Standard versus Olympus BX)
Hi, did a comparison of my photo adaptions I use currently: green rectangle: Olympus BX with Canon EOS600D (the intermediate image is directly projected to the camera sensor) red rectangle: Zeiss Standard with large field optovar 0,8x - KPL SKPL 10x/20 (Ocular) - YN EF35mm (Camera objective) - Cano...

Re: DSLR issue
Thats interesting, I thought direct projection largely eliminates CA, not sure about axial CA tho. You can eliminate the magenta and greens with photo editing software but I suspect you want to eliminate it at the source.

Re: Baby Oedogonium
Hi Tim, Great images, occasionally I also stumble upon newly hatched Oedogonium tethered to the coverslip via the holdfast structure. Have you observed the motile zoospore stage? Also I find it interesting that you achieve such high magnification with the 40x neofluar. What % of the F.O.V. do you co...

Re: A giant amoeba: Pelomyxa palustris
Thank you for the explanation Luis. I have seen one of these very large amoebas only ones and it was in a very similar habitat rich in filamentous algae. I am currently in Southern Spain and its muy caliente so I can understand the drought problem.

ID - a bouquet of cysts
Anyone got a clue what this structure might be? I have the feeling that the stalk and cluster of round objects (cysts maybe) are two completely independent structures that just happened to be together in this shot. I've never seen such a thing before.

The short version is that I don't use my Standard any more, but I use the Universal almost every day! I'd be interested to read more about that and see the progress you've made with upgrading your Universal :) Are the Zeiss Jena apos plug-and-play compatible with the Zeiss west? 45mm and 160mm? Hi Javier, I asked about the sample preparation because I found it interesting you managed to capture so many species of Actinosphaerium and was wondering if you had to gather large amounts of bottom sediments or something like that. A floating coverslip is exactly what it sounds like. You take a cl...

Thank you Tim and Javier. I would love to see this stacked too though... This is really beautiful footage and particularly impressing that you produced with a phone. Can you tell me more about the specimen preparation, how did you mount it (i.e. floating coverslip or simply a drop of water added to a slide) and such?
