The first subject is an inexpensive calibration slide. It should highlight the planarity of field and tends to make chromatic aberation more noticeable.

Glen, I don't often go to species level on Naviculoids although perhaps I ought to; may I ask what makes you suggest N. angusta? Seemed to me to be the closest to an ID out of the Navicula on the diatoms.org website - though would need dimensions to be more than tentative https://diatoms.org/specie...

Perhaps others have had better results from a web search, but I have yet to find cotton that states it is ophthalmological grade.

I suppose one could pop into an ophthalmologist and ask but I would not be surprised to get a blank look from them.
