Re: IMMERSION OIL ALTERNATIVES

Oil refractive index should be near 1.518, so to match the glass. My crude experience, I tried all oils in my kitchen: olive, xvg olive, corn, soy, canola, sesame, moebius, sewing machine oil. All worked decently ; even water more or less does the job! Despite the large refractive index mismatch. Wi...

Re: Hello from Norway

Yes, the scenery is great! and minivan/camper is the best way to get around.

It's not so good for astronomy though, night light in the summer and continuous rain in the winter...

Re: What are higher-magnification projective eyepieces good for?

Which would be the "optimal" projection eyepiece, in terms of price/performance? A 2x or a 10x? Here a crude argument. For full format (35mm) cameras, the optimal lens is the 50mm (wide consensus). 85 or 135mm may be a bit sharper, but more expensive. Below 50mm, lenses are wide-angle and have all s...

Re: What are higher-magnification projective eyepieces good for?

Yes, the tests are very interesting, showing that resolution is not related to magnification, and the eyepieces all look so different! And I agree that, if possible, is obviously preferable to take the photo of the widest field. That's not my case as I have no plan objectives... But I found another ...

Re: Wanted: Stray light cap for Leitz dry darkfield condenser

My lovely Leitz D 0.80 condenser has no plastic insert with it :o Oh no!! did this plastic thing ever existed? Is it made of Unobtanium? I attach here a pdf (the second) with some possible plug profiles, based on the iris measurement and Leitz catalog image18mm plus minus. You may print it (on pape...

Hello from Norway

H I'm Giorgio, living in Stavanger Norway I like fiddling with optics, then once a setup is more or less working, I get bored and move to a new setup. Current hype is on 3D-printed microscope accessories, to pimp up my ancient Swift microscope. I would happily help anybody in need of weird adapters,...

Re: What are higher-magnification projective eyepieces good for?

Here my late thoughts about the issue.. summary: it's all about correct spacing. 1) Why low-power photo eyepieces have problems I believe that is due to their focal length and the correct positioning of eyepiece and sensor. High NA objectives are very sensitive to the misplacement of the "virtual im...

Re: How important is axial exit/entrance pupil positioning in an afocal configuration?

In the following link, they say that Coma is affected by wrongly placed pupil/aperture... Nice presentation, interesting to see so many different cases clearly drawn out and ray-traced, are you referring to page 37 "Effect of Stop Position"? Forgive me if I am being dim-witted, but in what sense do...

Re: How important is axial exit/entrance pupil positioning in an afocal configuration?

It seemed to me that the differences are small or undetectable. As written above, it is probably due to the fact that the camera lenses has much less aberrations than the microscope objective. Only theoretically: - Matching the pupils (same position, same diameter) reduces the stray light - The cent...

Re: Wanted: Stray light cap for Leitz dry darkfield condenser

Thanks for the enthusiasm! I've tried to reverse-engineer the stray light cap from the illustration in the Leitz manual. If the illustration is true, you can generate the cap only from the measure of the iris diameter. If the illustration is not realistic, well, you have to take all the weird geomet...

Re: Wanted: Stray light cap for Leitz dry darkfield condenser

Can you sketch a drawing or estimate the size of this cap? At least the outer diameter d1. So i can design it and you can order it 3D printed from some shop nearby you. Meanwhile, you can just try to cut a disc of cardboard, it may be enough already. For the next generations, it will be very useful ...
