This lens is far better than I expected.
I added extension tubes to the fully extended bellows to get 45 cm (almost 18") of extension. WD still am amazing 10.5 cm!
Gave me a 5x magnification with superb quality, at 1024 pixel image I can see the microsculpturing in the ant's head.

Re: an excellent 1x-3x++ macro lens
Thanks.
Not sure the camera/lens was meant to be used over an eyepiece. Here is the setup as purchased. The only glass I could see is in the drawing tube, the block above it contains just a diaphragm.

Re: an excellent 1x-3x++ macro lens
The camera came attached to a Leitz Ortholux microscope, likely from the 1980's. No markings anywhere except on the front of the lens.
My guess is that the camera, per se, has no value. Fortunately the lens unscrews from the body.

an excellent 1x-3x++ macro lens
I recently acquired an old Leitz 35mm, film, microscope camera; no features, no viewfinder. Just a camera back with a removable lens. I add the lens to a bellows attached to a Nikon D7200; similar setup as here: www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16238&p=126933&hilit=insect#p...

There is a 45mm Olympus Polarizer on ebay, from Australia for $114.00 US. I have an identical one; works perfectly on a BHS Item 364049995282 https://www.ebay.com/itm/364049995282?hash=item54c3121612:g:7NAAAOSw7lpjc4Xa&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAsEpoOQzLAhm7RbghaG8%2FUJ7DKY84ZvzOByP5yMuXx5cRXAnWZbXh7bjSa6...

Hard to compete with one from China with SPlan objectives @ $4,000.00 on ebay. Some from the USA at $9,000.00!

Re: Simple whole mounts
Just to reiterate the ease of making insect whole mounts. Fly caught in bait trap for ants. Soaked in cold 5% KOH for 4 hours, washed in several changes of water, about 2 hours, into 70% isopropyl alcohol for 5 mins, into 99% alcohol 5 mins, 2 changes, mounted directly into Euparal. fLY 22viii22.jpg

Finally got a decent section with the 10" Lipshaw blade with a setting angle of about 8 degrees; it's a huge blade. I was having a lot of trouble getting the wax to infiltrate the specimen; actual problem was to get the Toluene to leave the inside of the specimen. An article in Micscape Magazine sug...

Needed for removing air bubbles in specimens for wax embedding and slicing.
I have seen these specifications; would these work?
Flow rate 3CFM
ultrmate vacuum 5 Pa
1/4 HP motor

Re: Slide ringing table
I posted this about 1 year ago: "I have a Brunel ringing table, very well made. However, if the round coverslip of your slide is not exactly in the center the ringing table will not work. The gap between the edge of round table and the stand is small, the slide cannot overlap the edge by more than a...

Re: Mosquito wing for objective testing
Wing mounted in Canada Balsam, under a coverslip.
I don't think you would get the best resolution if in water.
There is an image of the same wing taken with the 100x SPlan Apo here:

Re: Simple whole mounts
Mites, beetles and other not-too-delicate invertebrates can be cleaned by placing them in a sonic water bath. Place specimen in a small vial or saucer in water containing a small amount of a surfactant such as liquid soap -use the smallest drop. About 3 minutes in the bath will remove most or all of...

Re: New user: photomicroscopy - Leitz laborlux D - photographic catalog of insect parts
Unless you want to study the internal musculature, insect parts are best processed by soaking in 5% potassium or sodium hydroxide. Overnight at room temp. or 1 hour at 60 C. This will dissolve all the soft tissue and leave a transparent appendage. Mounting in Euparal, as you do, will enhance the tra...

Thanks Bob I made a similar set up but using small vials; working with the xylene in the garage. I have bought a large Lipshaw knife that will fit the microtome; should be here aft...

Re: Springtails and other soil mesofauna - Microscope reccomendations
A low power dissecting scope is needed for sorting specimens; a cheap American Optical works fine. For photography you do not need a microscope use Nikon CFN objectives on bellows or extension tubes; a 20x will magnify a 1 mm springtail enough to fill the frame of most cameras. a 10x and 40x are als...

Just received an 80A Lipshaw microtome; 18" long, weighs around 100 pounds.
Anyone know the function of the 2 knobs arrowed?
Unfortunately it came with a wrong blade - a 120mm American Optical blade; microtome needs a 230mm blade!

I am still sorting through different Berlese funnel litter samples. Mites are very abundant, haven't counted but seems like 20-30 species. For all species, except 1, there are numerous individuals. The odd one was this critter, a hard black ball that appears to be carrying a house on its back. Top i...
