Re: Olympus LB versus SB objectives

But the biggest disadvantage of the SB Olympus objectives, IMHO, is the too short working distance . This feature has been mentioned on the Olympus brochure. Indeed, the front lens of even the 10X0.32 planapo SB objective is very close to the coverslip. That of the 20X0.65 planapo is dangerously cl...

Re: What is the optimal combination of 5 objectives?

I don't use the 4x much at all. 10x is fine for scanning the slide, imho. And I love having a mid-magnification oil objective.

Thus, with five spots, I would go: 10x, 20x, 40x Dry, 40x oil, 60x/100x oil.

And for the one phase objective, I think you would be happiest with a 20x.

I remember the crazy field number. Did they ever make any accessory that could actually take advantage of it?
Yep, the BiSW 7x eyepieces have a FN of 29mm! The 10x are 26.5mm.

Also I am trying to figure out the SB phase objectives…especially if they work the LB phase condenser..there are indications that they do not. The lack of readily available Olympus ...

If you go to: http://www.alanwood.net/olympus/downloads.html Then the "Olympus High Quality Optics catalogue" pdf is a comprehensive overview of the SB optics, and the "Olympus LB Objectives" and "Olympus LB Objective Series for Biological Use" pdfs are the same for the LB ones. Those scratches on the phase annuli might not be a big problem, as long as they let thought a decent ring of light. That said, I never use phase since getting DIC, so I wouldn't worry about them anyway.

These are 160mm, right? Do you know the eyepiece pickup point? This data is missing from my go-to reference, Die Mikrofibel. (I'm just curious, not looking to expand my collection...)

Yeah I'm sorry for that, I realize now I should have said that it's for centering an epi illumination light source, as it's in no way specific to fluorescence.

Re: Considering mounting alternatives for an Olympus BX 53 and Canon EOS Rebel SL3.

Direct projection to full frame (ideal) or aps-c would be my preferred method. A friend recently bought a BX53 and set it up for direct projection with a Nikon Z7 full frame camera using the method described in the link below (U-TV1x-2 -> U-TMAD -> T2-Z adapter -> Z7). The results are awesome. For f...

Re: Poor man’s "Kohler" illumination

But... It's not an approximation of the Kohler principle. The principle of Köhler is about focal points and image planes. An image of the light source should be in sharp focus at the objective back focal plane. Just look down an eyepiece tube with an eyepiece removed (or use a phase telescope) and h...

Re: Ancient Leitz Wetzlar darkfield condenser

They are just standard parfocalizing shims. I ended up with a bunch that came from a dealer of various thicknesses. I put a flat file that is wider than 20mm on them and start a bevel on them, finishing on a sandpaper pad. Firstly, I rotate the objectives around the nosepiece to find the position w...

Re: Ancient Leitz Wetzlar darkfield condenser

Objectives and nosepieces with crappy machining often need to be centered using thin bevelled shims against the objective shoulder, so the objective can be orbitally adjusted. I took an over 120 micron variance out of a 60X Chinese planachro that way. Never heard of that approach, thanks for the ti...

Okay so i think im getting it. The 160mm and 170mm are both the same phisical size and i will not have to make any ajustment on the stage when changing between these two objectives. The only change is were the image they produce is being delivered, in the eyepiece-hole of the head. Is that it? Am i...

As long as you use 170mm eyepieces on your 170mm microscope, both 160mm and 170mm objectives will work ok, as the location of the image only differs by 2mm, as seen here: https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?p=77060#p77060 I really like the 170mm Pl Fl objectives I've tried, ...

Sure, the Nikon CFN plans would probably work just fine. But they are Plan Achromats. Good achromats, but probably not a huge difference to the PZO achromats the PZO scope comes with. Personally, I wouldn't pay very much for such a modest improvment (when you can often pay less for better fluorite a...

I saw you linked a Nikon 160mm planapo. Since Nikon is kind of an outlier in terms of corrections in the finite era, I would stay away from them in a mix&match system. To find out what mismatcehd combinatiosn are compatible, you either need to find ask someone who has tried a specific combination, or you need to take a risk and try it yourself. Re: Compatibility of new eyepieces

The Swift 380T is a finite (160 tube length) microscope; except for Nikon since 1980 or so, most finite microscopes depend on eyepieces to help correct objective aberrations. I also own and recommend those WF10X/22 high eyepoint eyepieces, but they provide no corrections and thus work best for mode...

22mm is the width of the image circle, not the tube width. But these are for 30mm tubes, not 23.4mm. So they will only fit on superwide heads, or many stereo microscopes. Re: Banding in my images when attempting flash photomicrography:

It's not the shutter speed that freezes motion - it's the flash. The duration of the flash is extremely short when used at 1/8 power or less. What you need to do is reduce the power of the continuous illumination. Then set an exposure time that's long enough to trigger the flash (say 1/160s). The go...
