Re: What is this I wonder...
Is it the same as this one as I've identified this i think to Caenomorpha medusula because of the posterior spine https://www.flickr.com/photos/154534235@N07/50932877982/in/datetaken/ As far as the low oxygen water, these are from a 2 litre jar that I keep all my samples in, I do supply it with oxyg...

What is this I wonder...
What is this I wonder. Have spent quite a few hours now looking through all my online PDF books and I cannot find a name for this little critter. It moves damn quick and is very hard to image. EDIT: It might be is a Metopus but it's not like the normal shaped ones I see, but then it does twist while...

Different species of Spirostomum
In one of my samples I have come across a number of Spirostomum. The problem I'm having quite a few look different from the normal S. minus I normally see. I think a few of them are maybe S. intermedium. I'll post a few videos of both and see what you think. S. minus https://www.flickr.com/photos/15...

Stentor coerules or polymorphus
Came across this very contractile and green Stentor while sampling my last pond dip. I was amazed at how far it stretched. It was also very green and had the macronucleaus beads. Now I know both S. coerules and S. polymorphus has these beads but which one is it. My gut says S. polymorphus as S coeru...

This is one massive amoeba.
This is the biggest amoeba I have seen to date. It filled the whole field of view at 100X. The ciliate at the bottom of the amoeba is a Loxodes. If you take a Loxodes at 100 micron in length that means the amoeba must be at least 1200 microns long and 500 microns wide. Unsure what type it is but it ...

This make sense as they are pretty quick and very hard to image. Thanks for the link as well it's a shame there is not an english version of Alfred Kahl's book.

Re: Struggling with an ID
These two came from the same specimen jar. I must have seen about 20 off these critters altogether. I'm pretty sure it is the same species as above as they were all together. https://www.flickr.com/photos/154534235@N07/50914092257/in/datetaken/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/154534235@N07/50914093062...

Struggling with an ID
I'm struggling with this one. My first thought was euplotes or a chilodonella but seen from a different angle that you don't normally see them from.
I'm sure someone will point me in the right direction.

Re: Amateur Microscopy vs Astronomy
I'm 12 short of the full messier list so I've seen 98 off them. But there are many hundreds even thousands of galaxies, clusters, nebulas, and binary stars that can be seen with a telescope. Off course the bigger your scope the more light gathering ability it will have to see these fainter objects.

Re: Keeping specimens
Thanks Bob that's really interesting. My aquarium is a lot more simpler basically just soil or detritus from the the bottom of a pond, add some pond water and a few plants from the same pond, pretty basic but very effective, like a microcosm of the actual pond.

Keeping specimens
I have a small fish tank that I have half filled with pond water and have done a few hay infusions inside it. This has accumalated in having a lot of Paramecium, cyclidium, and other numerous ciliates buzzing around. Now what I do is whenever I get a good specimen say for example a Lacrymaria olar o...
