Figs are commonly grown here, with winter protection. Yes. I know it seems daunting. Some work ahead. thanks for the support!

Pomegranate emerging bud.
One of my pet horticultural projects, , is an attempt to establish a small pomegranate production here, in southern Ontario. We have the degree days for sure but winter has been our nemesis with tender fruit varieties, since we can be expected to hit -20 c. in any winter and considerably below in so...

Re: Snagged Some More Objectives for the 4 Series Apostar
In the 1961 catalogue for the series 2/4, as was also the case in 1955, they list magnesium fluoride "americote" coatings as standard for all of the essential glass surfaces of the optics. Prior to that it was an option since around 1950, with coated catalogue #'s being prefixed by a C. In the May 1...

Re: Snagged Some More Objectives for the 4 Series Apostar
Then again, it's probably just as well I don't have access to modern highly corrected microscope optics to compare, as I might become a bit disappointed with my nearly antique microscopes and optics. Any obvious differences between the gp objectives and the late 50's brushed chrome edition? I have ...

I have been unable to locate that lubricant list from AO, previously mentioned. Some of them were proprietary, some blends, and some were commercial brands. There were about 10 or 12 in all. However, when it comes to rack and pinions and ball races in nosepieces, what one company used was probably p...

Re: Mold on blueberry,beautiful!
Probably locally grown then. Quite amazing, actually. Those two mold genuses I mentioned are common saphrophytes of harvested fruit. Trichoderma particularly likes wet blueberries and looks like a white cottony coating. Another possibility is alternaria, which is white when young, turning dark when ...

Re: Mold on blueberry,beautiful!
You answered one of my questions. The mold developed after the fruit was washed, so it is a post harvest fungus, most likely a trichoderma or possibly rhizopus, if there was any black developing on it. My other question was related to the source of the blueberries. China is a northern hemisphere cou...

Re: Mold on blueberry,beautiful!
You seem to have made these almost black and white? Given the time of the year in the northern hemisphere, I am assuming that this was a post harvest fungus but then, I do not know what China is doing regarding protective environment shelters or manipulating rainy and dry periods to induce dormancy ...

Re: HMC / Phase Contrast comparison
HMC is somewhat similar to using a slit lamp, a technique that was used over 100 years ago. It produces a kind of oblique illumination which shows up relief, primarily when the slit aperture is offset. Straight on phase doesn't but, if the phase condenser is offset and the iris used as well to produ...

Re: Head compatibility/availability for Leica BM E
Here is a new trinocular one that the seller doesn't know anything about, so it is a super bargain. The dovetail is not the right size but it is too small, so adapting it would be pretty easy. It is 25.00 and will likely stay that way. The dovetail is 30mm but the telan lens is a decent normal size,...

Re: Head compatibility/availability for Leica BM E
This is a hard one because that is a fairly new educational model. Binocular heads would likely stay with the bodies, so finding an orphan one might be difficult. I've never seen one of these scopes but it looks like the head is mounted using a normal kind of circular dovetail. If you could measure ...

I'm pretty sure these were made by Kyowa, and are J.I.S.( 37mm parfocal)and 170mm tube, which Nikon and Olympus were not. They were 35mm and 36.65 respectively with 160mm tubes. Getting into those in a mix with the Bristol objectives will throw a monkey wrench into parfocality and if any replacement...

Re: Hi! And some advice if you have any?
One of the things that happens with 5X eyepieces that can be bothersome, is that the f.o.v. is double that of a 10X., which in the case of your instrument, yielding the same apparent field, would be 42mm. You can't have a 42mm f.o.v. in a 30mm tube, so although the 5X eyepieces have a wider f.o.v., ...

Re: Hi! And some advice if you have any?
The 21 number is a field of view measurement, which is also related to the magnification of the eyepiece. If you obtain different eyepieces, the field of view will be different through them. Also, most microscopes are built to a sort of default performance level based on a specific eyepiece and it i...

Re: Hi! And some advice if you have any?
Depends whether you feel you really need a zoom microscope. There are zooms and then there are high resolution zooms. Zooms, especially earlier generation Chinese ones, had to sacrifice optical quality for the convenience of zoom. Older American higher end zooms such as the AO 580 and the B & L SZ 7,...

If you could provide the two models you plan to engineer the swap with, there is a good chance I could tell you. I have or have access to quite a few stands made from about 1920 to the post war. Janvangastel; I suspect that you are still being hampered in your decision making by comparisons to telescopes. Microscopes are more modular in general. If you own a light bucket and you also need a small refractor, you have to have both. With microscopes, the frame or stand as they are called, can ...

Re: $30 mystery condenser
There were numerous brands that had as their cheaper phase option a standard abbe 1.25 condenser that could have separate phase annuli fitted into it, one by one. This was often for use with a system where only one phase magnification was necessary( often 40X for blood counts or the like) and you se...

Re: $30 mystery condenser
You would have to post some more pictures, principally from the top and the bottom, in order to deduce just what it is, unless someone happens to have had experience with one like it. The specification 1.25 immediately implies that it is an oil immersion condenser but that kind of flies in the face ...

I was writing this as the last was posted; entirely agree. It is a mistake to compare telescopes to microscopes because despite being optically based instruments, there have been fewer truly dynamic developments in telescope design than there have been with microscopes since W.W.II. I'm not sure whether you have made a decision to purchase but if not, you might look into this one. It is in Germany. Rathenow survived East Germany and has been a small but quality German brand. Be careful lumping Leitz and Leica together. It can become confusing to novices, who might think that parts or accessories from one brand can be used on the other. They aren't connected much in design and not at all in ownership of the company . Leica microscopes bear more similarity to AO/Reichert ...

Ok, i got it, so the higher magnification of objectives i go then it is better to go with lower magnification of the eyepieces, so i keep the total magnification within limits, so 800X-1000X aren't really good unless i have good optics and using oil immersion?
