Baltic Amber:

#1 Post by Rodney » Tue Jun 09, 2015 8:55 pm

I was looking at this Baltic amber sample and trying to determine what this darker area is. This amber chip is not flat at all, and I have a light directed through it from below. The magnification is 35x.

Was the darker item embedded in the amber or external?

I was in the process of flipping the sample and it bounced off the slide into a crack at the rack and pinion behind the stage. Now I will have to take the microscope apart or just leave it.

You might want to clean the scope. You know how Jurassic Park got their dinosaurs don't you ;)

Want be the first one I have ever lost, this stuff is like a spring board. May wind up as amber resin grease.

A little more brilliant one. Magnification around 50x with a b&l dynazoom. Depth of field seems fair for such an irregular shape.

glad you like it Mr. t., that should have been real good work, I left out the good by mistake. I`m glad you were able to catch that and make the point for whatever reason.

Flip side of same sample with a lot of light scatter.

From this last image, it looks like maybe it's just the way it fractured? With a little color variation thrown in to make things interesting?
It's hard to say. Very interesting piece though, I have always been interested in amber, but know little about it.

Yep those hard resin fractures cause a lot of interesting light refraction and are very difficult to focus on any given one. I have several more flatter sections that may take a little better. I may try to send out a few pictures of those later today.

I spent the last hour trying to find the first one that flopped off the stage towards the back of the scope. I found this little speck of amber in a crack just now. I remember looking at it a few years ago and I made one wrong move and this one was gone also. So this is it again. An extremely tiny speck of amber I thought was interesting. The magnification is 50x. I will take a front and back photo of it, then I will try out some of these other amber particles I have.
