Led Retrofit
Led Retrofit
Hi i have retrofitted 10w led to my Olympus cha microscope. I have added a heatsink with fan and temp controller to turn on the fan for thermal management. Right now I have set the operating temperature as 40 deg Celsius which is measured on the heatsink. Is this temperature is good or still i need to reduce the operating temperature?

What temp is your led specced at?

Re: Led Retrofit
From the seller website it shows temp should be below 65 deg c . It might be measured directly on the bottom of led.
Re: Led Retrofit
My CH2 LED is set at max 0.7 Watt, plenty of light even for dark ground and phase.
Ahh my error it is using 0.7 A not Watt.

Re: Led Retrofit
dark ground at what magnification?
Re: Led Retrofit
My dark ground/FIELD success rate at the CH2 is using the Olympus CH2-PCD condenser at 40* (or should I say NA max 0.65)
Note 10 Watt LED on an Olympus CHx may be a danger to your eyes when used at full power.

You might try measuring as close to the.junction as you can but sounds like it should be outputting the described spectrum. I have had several "10w" LEDs that due to the power output of the driver and closer look at the voltage were only operating at 5 or 6 watts and they are cool enough to not need active heat management. The CH series has it's light directly under the stage, though, right? A 10w halogen has about the same heat output as a 10w led so it seems already designed to handle the heat.

Re: Led Retrofit
The critical temperature is inside the LED, not eays to measure. The LED is usually already bonded to a star board with good conductivity. The max. heat sink temperature then depends on the thermal coupling of star board to heat sink. If you attatach it with 2 screws and heat compound the heat transmission will be fine and you can go a bit over 40°C, maybe 65°C is right. With bad thermal condurctivity 40°C at the heat sink may be already too much. 10W is a good choice, with higher powers and light hungry contrast methods you will need them all.
