G4 2W 24 SMD Capsule LED

I wonder why one of these would not work in place of a halogen bulb with a G4 base?....

I know, it is rated for only 2 watts, but I am beginning to see that the low wattage rated LED devices are plenty bright for microscope use... A 3 watt LED assembly is EXTREMELY bright, and easily bright enough to use.. I have one on order from Ebay...

Interesting! Yes, I have a 3w LED in my first LOMO scope, that thing is wicked bright, I rarely use it at full brightness. I'll bet 2 watts would be plenty usable, though I see the emitters in this are arranged for 360 degree spread instead of focused in one direction, this might be a downer. But the price is attractive. Looks like this has internal circuitry, I wonder if you can dim it?

I think a PWM unit would work to dim... I have one of these blubs on order so I can see what it looks like when it gets here... Maybe some kind of mirror/reflector behind it to help give the light emitted a direction... I don't know about the voltage... I think the microscopes would provide AC so the can dim it easier.. A small bridge rectifier might be incorporated somehow... It was jut a thought... For a buck it will be something to play with...
