#1 Post by vasselle » Wed Oct 29, 2014 6:24 am

Bonjour a tous

Hi, I am using a translator so sorry if this does not make any sense! I think it is a red filamentous algae. I believe those circles are chloroplasts.

Where did you find it? Does it move on its own?

Où l'AS tu trouvé? Est-il passer son propre?

The redish colour makes it confusing but i believe it is a dying Hyalotheca.

No, I think seb had it right in the original post some years ago, this was a filamentous diatom. It's true that setting colour aside, it looks a bit like a small Bangia or less indented Hyalotheca, but the last two photos show entirely different detail from those. You can see both fine interlocking teeth where the cells meet and a defined girdle band across each, not in keeping with a plant cell wall, but reflecting finer sculpting of the valve faces and the region where the two overlap.

There are enough diatoms with this general form – besides the mentioned Eunotia pectinalis one might compare araphids like some Diatoma, Fragilariforma, Fragilaria, etc. I don't myself know enough to narrow down what is most likely.

I have had a good look through my books and come up with your diatoms I think its Ellerbeckia.
You can see the golden colour in one of the photos.
Thank you
