Gastrotricha, rotifer and water flea?

#1 Post by Shivs » Fri Mar 12, 2021 6:43 am

Hi Guys, Sorry if I'm spamming this board. Hopefully when I learn more I can answer some questions for people :D

http://office.shivs.org:5080/pond1.mp4

First part: about 200 um filmed with 40x objective - I believe its a Gastrotricha ?
Second Part: this is from a moss sample with a 1.5% xantham gum solution to slow it down, I believe its a rotifer. At first I thought it was a Tardigrade, I have seen many of these.. anyone know the species?
Third Part: This guy was zooming around my slide, used xantham gum and slowed him down... about 150um filmed at 20x objective.. I believe its some type of water flea.

Any further insight would be great.

1. Correct a Gastrotrich
2. Correct a Rotifer but I don't photograph rotifers so unsure but most likely a Bdelloid rotifer
3. I think you are correct a copepod called a water flea

Not neccessarily that species, just that genus. Im getting crosseyed and cant decide if I see stuff or not, so I will come back to it later if noone else has.

I didnt see trochi, the little flip out things at the front, but she wasnt really comfy and feeding, so I am not at all sure about that. I saw two little toes, and two big teeth, I think. I saw a deep mastax, that at least I am kind of sure of.

If it does have trochi then maybe

Or

(Again, just the genus, not the species) depending on whether it lays eggs or has live young (I dont know how I would even tell).

The second is for sure a bdelloid, and you for instance get a glimpse of some features like the dorsal antenna. It is not Adineta, which do not move like this...instead the wheels are contracted because it is crawling rather than feeding. Unfortunately without seeing those or eyes I think identification is not possible, although the short spurs would rule out some types.

The water flea (which are actually branchiopods, not copepods) is more particularly one of the Chydoridae, for which the small pointed head and short antennae are characteristic. There are a lot of genera that are hard to distinguish, although this is plainly one of the rounder ones like Chydorus itself. They're common in a lot of habitats. For the record, tardigrades don't seem to be...they are more particularly associated with mosses and lichens.

I'm not entirely sure about your first gastrotrich but the bristles easily mark the second as Chaetonotus. :)

The eyes were clear on one frame of the video, it does have some on its rostrum, like a rotaria would.

Your third specimen is indeed a water flea - genus Chydorus, likely Chydorus sphaericus. Rostrum and carapace shape unmistakable.

Am I correct in thinking that this rotifer has the option to be sessile?
