Coleps?

#1 Post by mazo4033 » Tue Mar 23, 2021 3:46 pm

Found some of these organisms from a sample I had sitting around. They swam really fast and were hard to record under 400x magnification! I wasn't sure what they are but I'm thinking maybe Coleps.

Appears to be to me, but I do't know I'd give my opinion much weight.

Well, since you asked... :D It is in the family Colepidae, but is not necessarily Coleps. The old genus Coleps has been split, and identification now requires a close view of the calcified armour & spines, to rule out Nolandia, Reticoleps, Pinacocoleps, etc. We don't see enough detail, here, for ID to genus.

Fascinating, there really are a lot of split genus these days. Good to know, thank you! :)
