Desmid? If so, is it Staurastrum? I have used http://www.digicodes.info/index.html to try to identify this algae.

Great photo! Yes, I think you got the identification correct, it is Staurastrum which is a desmid. Maybe Staurastrum planctonicum but from an apical view, not a frontal view.
