Are these algae?

#1 Post by Heliozian » Sun Apr 11, 2021 10:01 pm

Hello folks

I've been trying to look harder at algae and get on top of some of them. I found some bits today which had me totally stumped

This one was within a whole clutter of algae and debris from the bottom of a sample from a little pond. I saw lots of spheroid green algae both with and without flagella and some diatoms but there were some things which I thought must be algae but can't find anything like them in my books. I've tried to measure the overall width and length as well as the diameter of the central circle and the red organelles on the first photo. There were quite a few of them around and they were entirely static, you can see another one below the central one in the first photo

If anyone has an idea of what these are I'd be very happy to hear it - I'll stick my other mystery in a separate post

Many thanks

Ian
