Critters in loricas help

#1 Post by D0c » Sat May 08, 2021 10:53 am

Two more critters that have me stumped.

Video 1 shows I think a tintinnidium inside an unfinished lorica.

Video 2 I'm not sure about as it was nearly twice a big as the tintinnidium in video 1.

The first guy doesn't look like a tintinnid, to me. It seems to have a lumpy, deformed body, but the outer covering does not look to me like it is separate from the cortex of the cell, so I don't think it is a lorica. The best ID I can suggest is "spirotrich."

The second one also appears to me to lack a lorica. I think the "lorica" is an illusion caused by folds in the rather stiff (but nevertheless contractile) cortex of the cell. That cortex is distinctly ridged, which indicates that it has well-defined longitudinal ciliary rows. It looks (to me, at least) like a rather small, and perhaps not too healthy, Stentor.

The way I was looking at it was the critter was in the process of forming a lorica. I don't know how long it takes to make a home to live in.

I can see what you mean looking at the second video it does resemble a deformed stentor species.

Thanks.

Well, I can't be sure my interpretation is the correct one. Anyway, those were my thoughts when I looked at the videos. :)
