Stentor sp. ? and macronucleus troubles

#1 Post by rhiannontries » Thu May 13, 2021 10:32 pm

Having some trouble identifying the shape of this guy's macro nucleus. I have circled what I believe might be the moniliform macronucleus, but I am not certain. Have I missed the mark? If so, could someone please tell me where the macronucleus is? And of course its shape.

Thank you so much in advance!

.
You might find the pdf 'Revision of the genus Stentor' in this link useful: http://www.wfoissner.at/data_prot/Foiss ... 55-289.pdf

See page 277 (23 of the pdf) fig. 34 for Macronucleus types

Hi rhiannontries,
it looks like your sample has quite a large water layer between coverslip and the specimen. It is nice because it help to observe the natural shape of the beast.
However to view and spot the details like the marko nucleus you would need to reduce the water layer, so the coverglass pressure would flaten your stentor a bit. Sometimes the detritus or "dirt" may prevent this, so kind of removal of the detritus could improve.
