Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
Wm. Blake
Actually, I found the symmetry of this specimen to be more interesting than its identification, whatever that is. I looked for a numerical pattern in the number of objects in its four concentric rings (and one center object) but couldn’t find one: 31, 18, 16, 6, 1.
This specimen is from an infusion of timothy hay and alfalfa. When I go to Google Images and search "pollen" I see mostly SEM’s and for the few LM micrographs, nothing that looks like this.
So I speculate that it is a seed packet either of alfalfa or timothy hay, that when it breaks apart, disperses the objects within. I speculate that the outer 31 rectangular objects are protective and that the 38 interior objects are the seeds.
Have you seen something like this and, if so, what was it?
