I know that some eukaryotes can be as small as 5 μm and that
a rod bacillus can be as long as 5 μm.
So it’s theoretically possible that I’m looking at protista here—but I doubt it.

(BTW, those long wiggling filaments . . . when the slide dried, I could see that they were a segmented alga with chloroplasts. Their means of motility is puzzling to me, a kind of wiggling motion).

Thanks. I think that "swarm" is the word. And when the water evaporates you get a vortex and increased density. Reminds me of Poe's "Descent into the Maelstrom"
