but it showed up this morning in a sample including submerged leaves and twig, some bottom soil and water I brought home yesterday from the duck pond in the park a few blocks from where I live. The picture quality isn't terribly good, but it's best I could do because this critter was very "busy" and fast. Keeping it in the FOV at anything much over 100x was quite a challenge. In any case, as the title says, I'd like to know what it is

That's a hypotrich, you'll find them in a lot of water samples

Thanks for clearing that up. There's a picture of an Oxytricha on the Wikipedia page for Hypotricha that's a dead ringer for the organism I found. It ought to be interesting to see what else grows out of my sample.
