Don't Know What I've Found....

I took a tiny sample of some brown fibrous gunk from the bottom of my bird bath. It was full of hundreds of these red dots, impossible to resolve as they seemed embedded in the gunk. I finally managed to get up close and personal with one of them which was outside the mess. Anyone got any ideas?
