tiny glass house

#1 Post by Sjeiti » Sat May 14, 2022 2:44 pm

Found this tiny little one in a jar that had been sitting in the sun too long.
It looks a bit like a very tiny stentor sitting in its own tiny glass jar.

The glass jar structure is a lorica. I am not sure on the ID, maybe thecacineta?

My previous identification was incorrect, it actually just appears to be a single stocked vaginicola.

Yes, it is in the family Vaginicolidae, and is probably in genus Vaginicola. We don't see a stalk or valve on the lorica, or an operculum (a lid-like attachment) on the cell, but magnification is low so any of these structures could be hidden from view.
