It seems Spathidium but...

#1 Post by NachoBen » Fri Dec 02, 2022 8:54 pm

Hi, I am pretty sure about this critter being genus Spathidium but...what species? I have not found it in the gigantic monography by Foissner.

Thank you all for your help.

Nacho Ben,
I am still looking for what yours could be. (I don't know!)
That video shows a very viscous one!
Yours at 2:21 has its mouth shut so I am looking at that for ID. ??

Look, I think Francisco has yours-

The first volume of Foissner and Xu's Monograph of the Spathidiida does not include the genus Spathidium, so it is not surprising that you did not see it there. :D Volume II hasn't appeared yet (if it will ever be written, following the death of Foissner). Identification of spathidiids is often difficult. Yours appears to be a species of Spathidium with a double oral bulge, like that of S. bavariense or S. simplinucleatum. The former is more likely, since there is no sign of a vermiform macronucleus.

Thank you very much indeed again, Bruce.

It is really hard to me to see any macronucleus inside an organism, all but Vorticella and Stentor. Everything looks to me like vacuoles.

Have a good microweekend.
